Issues with GMail not always alerting on received mail

Using the GMail app to get my gmail.  Sometimes it works great.  As soon as I get an email, it will notify me.  Other times, I have to turn on the screen and unlock the phone before the gmail app gets my mail.  This was never a problem on any other device I've used the GMail app.

I checked datasaver - it's off.

I'm not sure what else I can do to make this work.  I don't have a lot of notifications on my phone, but GMail is one of the ones upon which I rely.

it's going into doze & you haven't selected gmail to not sleep.

How do I do this?  I just tried to add GMail to the list of unmonitored apps, and gmail is not in the list of available apps.
