Is there a setting somewhere to keep the display lit when the phone is tethered? My Fascinate does this, but this phone keep sleeping after 15 seconds, even when plugged in (which is kind of a drag when I'm using it for GPS in my car).
Thanks in advance for your help!

Go to Settings->Developer Options-> and put a checkmark into Stay awake. That should keep the screen from sleeping when plugged in.
or
Go to Settings->Display->Sleep and select a higher value. I have mine set for 10 minutes and have not had it go to sleep yet, but I do not have a car dock so I have not used it as much as I normally do.

You can also use an app called screebl lite. It uses your phone's orientation to keep your backlight from going out. This way, you can keep your backlight setting at 15 seconds, but as long as the device isn't laying flat, the orientation will keep the screen on. It's great for reading long email messages too, when you aren't interacting with the touchscreen.

What GPS program are you using? I've used the Google Navigation program and never had my screen turn off, even when it's been "idle" far longer than the screen timeout and without having external power. Check the application's settings to see if there is a "keep awake" function.
