Messages shows 7 unread/new messages, but none are there.

I have cleared caches, reset badge notification within system settings, nothing works.  Using a Galaxy Note 8

Turns out the problem existed because of Mighty Text - when I read a text on my pc via MT, it "unhighlights" it in the messaging app, but does not mark it as read.  After I uninstalled and reinstalled MT the badge went away, but the problem persists, although it seems to be a MT problem.
