My phone's screen keeps turning on and off

This has been occurring for several months and, while I would like to say after an update at some point, I couldn't say which update or what was actually updated.  The problem is that when my Samsung Galaxy S5's screen is off, it will turn on for a few seconds before turning off again.  This is expected behavior when I receive a notification, but more than half the time there is no new notification.  It's to the point that I'm noticing the battery is draining because of this so I'd like to get the issue to stop.  I tried GSam per a recommendation elsewhere online, but I think the post is old and the current version doesn't give information on apps turning on and off the screens (including how often and for how long).  I'm not even sure it's an app vs system issue.

This phone has many different types of features Alienjon. Is this happening when are close by the phone?Have you tried making adjustments to the Motions and Gestures settings?

I couldn't say if it's not happening when I'm not around the phone, but I've noticed it happen when I'm at work and sitting with the phone on the desk next to me and when I have it charging when I'm sleeping at night and it's on the other side of the room (it's not the "always on while charging option" - it still only turns on for a moment before turning back off).

The only motion and gesture options I have enabled are 'smart alert' and 'palm swipe to capture'.  I've now disabled both.  In the Display section the 'Smart Stay' option is disabled (though I've had it both on and off before).

I disabled those options when you last posted.  I think it's happened another few times, but I'll reply in another day or two to make sure.
