I loaded my yahoo email on the email app and even thought its set to notify of new emails. I never receive an email until I actually go and open the app and check for new mail- at that time it will refresh and load new messages.
I can't figure out if I can get notifications for new text and emails from my gmail account either? I get a blue notification for facebook but nothing else. Does this model not have notifications??

Do you have background data on? Are those accounts set to sync? Settings > accounts
I would also check under the menu/action bar to see if there additional settings within each application for the notification options.

The notifications for my yahoo email are turned "on" on the phone. I'm not sure how to set the background data to "on"? So, you receive a notification for text messages?? Just double checking prior to going to verizon and telling them there is something wrong. Thanks for your answers so far!
Yes I receive notifications for text messages and Google+ and Google Talk.
Check settings > accounts & sync to see what you sync options are for the Nexus.
