S4 Chooses incorrect time zone when set to automatic

My S4, and my son's, are choosing the incorrect time zone when the phones are set to choose automatically.

The phones were working and my son noticed his was off earlier in the week and mine seems to have developed the same issue sometime last evening.

They are both choosing Central Time and should be choosing Mountain Time.

Location services are enabled on both (GPS & Verizon as well as Google Wi-Fi)

I've launched my phone in Safe Mode and the issue still occurs

On my son's we chose to set time zone manually which works, but it reset itself to automatic later and returned to being incorrect.

Thanks for any help.

JustaGeek,

We'll get that time corrected! It could be that the phones are picking up a different (and incorrect) location through your Wi-Fi connection if you are using one. Please turn your Wi-Fi off, power down the phone, remove the SIM card and battery for 30 seconds, then put the phone back together and turn it on (keeping Wi-Fi off). That should connect the phone to the nearest cell phone tower and prompt the correct time to display. Let us know the status of your clocks after trying this out!

It had 'fixed' itself prior to your reply. However, the issue is back, my son's phone moved ahead an hour again to Central Time Zone and his alarm went off an hour early... so since we're up we tried your suggestion (turn off wi-fi, power off remove battery and sim card wait 30 seconds, put it back together and turn it on...  the time didn't correct itself, it still is an hour ahead)... h e l p !

My computer was doing the same thing as well,  but try this have your Son call your phone or you call your sons phone see if that corrects the time.. when the call is pushing through it should correct any errors in the time..

B33,

Thanks for the idea... tried both ways, even tried calling from the old land line (yep, I'm a dinosuar) but no change... it's weird the weather app on the home screen displays the correct time but the actual time (top right corner) is an hour ahead of us (and if you look at time settinsg it's showing we are in central, when we are really in mountain)... guess it's better than being an hour behind and alarms going off late.. but still it's frustrating

For sure... hmm... I wonder if a clearing of the cache in the were the clock or time is located might help you might try that.. for doing that look in your settings find your apps then look for ALL and then look for Time and Date..

Thanks for trying JustaGeek. When did this begin with your phones? Anything change such as new apps, an update or settings? Please try testing the devices in safe mode for a full day to rule out app conflict. http://vz.to/1m8Mjg4

On my phone I believe it was the day I posted here (April 14th) on his a couple days prior to that.

Both had 'fixed' themselves until his changed back a couple days ago

No new apps, latest update applied to both phones (after his was already showing incorrect time).

Also of note, 3 other S4's in the household that do not have the issue(...yet?)

As mine is currently working I don't suppose there's a need for me to run in safe mode, but I will pass the instructions on to him

Thanks for the additional info JustaGeek. Each user configures their device with their own unique settings, configurations and apps. This can have a big impact on performance from one device to another, even if it is the same make and model. Please let us know how the device responds to safe mode. Please ensure you allow a full day to test the device in safe mode.

No change by running in safe mode for a day, still choose the wrong time if

set to time zone automatic.

Now another phone in the household has switched to Central Time also, as my

daughter's phone is now reporting the wrong time zone also and her alarm

went off an hour early this morning... this is getting frustrating.. h e l

fwiw, I turned off wifi on daughter's phone, powered off phone, removed battery and sim card and waited for a minute then put back together, powered on and phone still displayed the wrong time, turned wifi back on and then the time switched to mountain time... but then again who knows for how long Smiley Sad  (oh and I went in and checked my home router's setting to make sure I'm not using the wrong time or time zone there and it is set properly)

Have you tried a Reset System Settings in Menu》Accounts》Backup and Reset?

JustaGeek,

Thank you for trying all those steps. Let's lauch Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Mode>Set to LTE/CDMA. Then go back to Time Settings and adjust to your time zone. Keep us posted if this helps.

Ada,

I appreciate the response.. we had already just wiped his phone entirely and started over (which seems to be working.. at least for now).  Question though, with your idea, are you suggesting that it would have to remain on LTE/CDMA and you couldn't leave it set to global?

Great question JustaGeek! Switching to LTE/CDMA is just a troubleshooting step to make the phone recognize the time zone you are in. Once that is resolved you should be able to set to global if you prefer.

My S4 has also been experiencing the wrong time. It's an hour ahead and this started late March. It's irregular, but will clear itself each time after several minutes. I've gotten screen shots of the time, and then after the phone "resets" the time to the correct time, the information in the photo says I took it an hour earlier than the image shows. I've been able to push it to reset using Airplane mode, but this is getting irritating.

At the time this started, I hadn't done anything new to the phone: apps, settings, what have you. Perhaps taken several pictures. The closest time zone border to me is several hours away. States, in fact. But I also only have it going forward an hour, I haven't seen it go back one yet. Should I take my phone to a Verizon store? Could this be a software/hardware issue?

I'm sorry you're having these same issues Firebug62. You don't have to take it into a store. You can actually change time OFF of Automatic, so this can be updated, (while this is worked out by the manufacturer).

Thank you,

My phone is off by one hour.  Probably due to daylight savings time which we (AZ) doesn't follow.   My widget clock is right but the small clock on the notification bar is wrong.   Where do I fix that clock?

In your settings pull your notification bar Down tap on settings then find Time & Date or Date & Time click on that and look through the settings to make changes or change any settings thats needed to keep the time up to date..

I am having an issue where, when set to automatically grab the Timezone information from Verizon's network, my phone is an hour behind (And showing -7 Mountain Standard Time, when it should be -6 Mountain Standard Time DST) but only when I am in a specific area of my city.

This only happens in certain specific areas like when I am connected to certain cell towers (like at Work).  But when I am at home, everything is fine.

This happens with or without wireless enabled, so I don't think it would be incorrectly inferring anything from that.  In my specific case, It would appear Verizon has a cell tower / transmitter somewhere misconfigured for daylight savings time in my area.

My work around for now is to disable grabbing timezone information from the network (But still grab time information) and manually set my Time Zone to MST DST -6.   Works like a charm, but still annoying.
