Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Update

When will Verizon approve the Android 4.2 update for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus?  The slowness of Verizon to approve updates is inexcusable!  And to that I'll say, "I'm done!"  I am so disgusted with Verizon and their inability to provide updates to what is supposed to be a "Nexus" device.  It's not like they have to manipulate around manufacturer software.  It's pure Google operating system.  Load and test the drivers for CDMA and LTE and then launch the update.  At the MOST that should take no more than 2 weeks!  Since I have had my Nexus on Verizon, I have not recieved a single update prior to 2 months!  Android 4.2 update from Android 4.1 is so miniscule and, might I add, required no additional new drivers, so what is the hold up Verizon?  Where is the Android 4.2 update?  And, yeah, I know some techy out there is going to say, " well why don't you just jailbreak and load it yourself?"  Because I shouldn't HAVE to jailbreak my phone.  It's not a matter of can I do it, it's why can't I do it without jailbreaking from Verizon?  They sold this phone initially by claiming it to be a "pure Nexus" device and it's been nothing of the kind ever since!  So I say, "I'm done!"  That means that when my contract is up, I'm return to AT&T!  They have upgraded the towers in the area that I live and my friends on AT&T say their signals are even better than Verizon's.  AT&T's new LTE towers download at faster speeds than Verizon's too.  I would have happily stayed with Verizon if they would have only taken the Pure Nexus experience seriously!

To those who have stated that I've said this for Jelly Bean 4.1, you are correct!  The only reason I'm still here is because of the hefty penalty Verizon will charge me for terminating my contract early.  My contract doesn't expire until December 2013 so it would be a rather hefty penalty to pay.  But Android 4.2 has confirmed that Verizon refuses to change their position on slow updates, so when my contract is up (as I believe I stated on 4.1), you won't see REDNIBKRAM on Verizon anymore!

It appears as though the Verizon "love freaks" just can't seem to get the message.  I'm not saying that the updates aren't difficult, I'm saying that if Verizon chooses to use CDMA technology over GSM and that requires them to jump through hoops to get updates completed, then they should have NEVER agreed to carry a "pure Nexus" device, or at the very least, should have NEVER advertised the device as such.  My whole point is that Verizon LIED TO ME and told me that my phone was a "pure Nexus" device when I purchased it and switched from a GSM phone company (AT&T) when, in fact, they knew that I would NOT be getting updates directly from Google as the GSM versions of the SGN do.  At the very least, if Verizon really wanted to make this right, they would offer to allow anyone with a SGN phone who was lied to when they purchased it to exit from their existing contract without penalty, so we can purchase a "TRUELY PURE NEXUS" phone direct from Google or provide us with a choice of another phone (Windows Phone, iPhone, etc.) without having to renew a 2 year contract.  All I'm saying is that if Verizon won't or can't update the phones they themselves advertised as a "pure Nexus" phone, then they should make it right to the people they lied to.

I feel the same way..I bought Galaxy Nexus for Pure Google experience and for it's updates. It's been 2 months since Google dished out 4.2 to GSM. At this rate..GSIII will get their updates first before ours. Verizon should be ashamed for what their doing!! This will be my last phone from Verizon anyway. They got rid of unlimited data...now I have to folk over non-subsidized full price phones just to keep my unlimited plan? NO Thank You VERIZON! I might consider buying GN4 and move to T-mobile or ATT. I doubt Google wants to bring any "Nexus Brand phone" to Verizon ever again anyway. Only way for consumers to stick it to Monopoly is to not to patronize them. Keep the words out to everyone!!

No new drivers based on what? If you look at all the complaints about connectivity it could very well need updated drivers which then requires multiple licensing checks not just Verizon own checks. I would say they do need to do some serious checks for those that have problems.

Exactly my point.  GSM version gets immediate updates and has fewer

problems because it doesn't need to deal with all this driver crap.  All

the more reason to switch back to AT&T.  Besides the speeds I'm getting on

Verizons LTE in New Orleans isn't any faster than my friends are getting on

HSPA+ at AT&T.  I've complained to tech support only to be told excuses as

to why my speed is so slow.  I hate to see what will happen in February

when millions come to New Orleans for the Superbowl.  I'll be lucky to get

one bar on 3G then.

That's where you are wrong.  You have NO IDEA the process.  Just because it is worked on first and another worked on a different time doesn't make them one in the same.

The difference between Apple and Google.

Apple does it all at once and release them all at once.  Hence why their update process looks uniformed.  They do not release an update until all are ready.  They only do 1 major update a year.  With Google it's a totally different process and they don't do it all at once.

LOL! It also appears you did not go back to AT&T when Verizon did not have your JB by August 1, as you had said.

I didn't go back to AT&T for JB in August because the of VERY HEFTY penalty I will have to pay for cancelling my contract early and I got the Android 4.1 JB update.  Once I received the update and because the the penalty, I decided to give BIGRED another change at the next update.  I thought, "maybe it was such a huge update that they really needed to make sure everything was done right."  So, now here we are waiting for the 4.2.1 update and I'm still getting the same response from BIGRED as I got for JB 4.0 update.  It's quite clear that VZ DOESN'T CARE about customer satisfaction.  They use the excuse that they want their network to be the best and they want their phones to operate with little or no problems, yet when problems ARE discovered, it takes them months to send out the updates that Google has already released months prior.  I have discussed updates with Verizon, Google and Samsung support personnel.  I have even contacted Verizon Corporate and I fully understand the process by which updates are done, and believe me when I say that the update process at VZ is in serious need of restructuring.  Especially when it comes to Android devices.  But as far as this Android 4.2.1 update is concerned, I have spoken with Google and they have informed me that there was NO changes made to the operating system that would affect the CDMA or LTE drivers on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus, so there should be no reason why Verizon would not want to release the update.  The small changes (additions) to the operating system would in no way affect the communications on VZ.  So why hasn't VZ released this update yet.  Corporate says they need to test the software to ensure it doesn't affect communications on their network, yet Google hasn't changed anything in the operating system that would, so what are they testing?  VZ may have the better network, but CARRIER EXPERIENCE ISN'T ALL ABOUT THE BEST CONNECTION.  It's about customer SATISFACTION and not receiving updates on a pure NEXUS device in a timely manner is inexcusable and in NO WAY SATISFYING!  So when my contract is up, I will be returning to AT&T or giving T-Mobile a try on a pure Nexus device with no contract!

I agree with rednib. <Discussion about hacking and modifying of device removed per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.> Verizon is calling our bluff. Thinking that we're still the mindless consumers of 10 years ago. I will be jumping ship in dec 2013 as well and I can imagine that there're many others like us, which is why I'm also shorting the stock as I did with Apple when they pulled the same games. For some reason Verizon thinks they have so much control that they can hold back innovation. This is a clear sign to me that they're out of touch.  Anyone with some basic knowledge knows that Google released the Nexus 4 unlocked for 299.99, No contract, No <Deleted>, I paid 300.00 with a contract for my Galaxy Nexus so you do the math. It's all politics. There's not a timely process in which programmers are making the Google update work on the Google Flagship phone. Google already tested before they released!

Much of what you say clearly is on target, except going to at&t--Verizon, in my experience, is the best carrier though, like you, I've threatened to jump ship only to realize that there was no better carrier out there. And, yes, I'm 'mad as hell' too with the slow release of GN updates. So, I continue to write Verizon Wireless about this and several other unresolved issues. Don't give up on the Nexus i515...it's got a lot of life in it yet.

I had T-Mobile before Verizon and at the time i switched to verizon they

were both rolling put there version of 4g. T-Mobile's service was just as

fast as Verizon perhaps because less people are on it. Verizon does have

more reach but not much. Not enough for me to put up with product

manipulation. If I buy a premium product because I want to use the premium

features that the phone is capable of and then find that Verizon chose to

lock me out of those said features then yes I will go back to T-Mobile. The

innovation is more important to me then the service. Besides Wi-Fi is

getting better by the minute.

So most people are complaining that Verizon is the reason the galaxy nexus hasn't been updated yet. But no one mentions that the sprint version also is still running 4.11. So if your going to complain at least acknowledge that sprint is as bad as Verizon too, and maybe there is a reason both CDMA carriers haven't updated yet

CDMA and GSM have two different coding processes.  Apple for example will NOT release an update until all their devices are ready.  So in essence you get the placebo effect that all devices are updated at the same time.  CDMA requires, keys which the carrier is one of them, manufacturer, and Qualcomm.  If any changes happen to CDMA components it needs to be re-signed by all 3.  With LTE the new hardware is proprietary and belongs to various manufacturer and IS NOT open Source like GSM is.  It's easier to blame Verizon, but there are more hands involved than just the carrier.   GSM can use test keys for it to work, and for the most part most of it is open source(just the software).

Its pretty sickening how slow this is. The 4.1 JB update took 2 months and Verizon was the last carrier on the planet to update the Gnex. But for Verizon that was the fastest update of any phone ever for them, not including security patches.

I just hope Dish and Google get their carrier up by the time my contract is up.

And why am I not surprised!  Verizon is LAST AGAIN!

No. Sprint just got the update. Sprint always rolls out updates before Verizon.

Verizon has consistently crippled their phones with crapware and early obsolescence. When you combine that with the highest pricing in the industry and abandoning unlimited data, its the bottom of the heap.

As soon as my contract expires I'm dumping Verizon - where customers come last.

Yeah I heard that too. Well hopefully that means Verizon will release their

update asap too otherwise I might dump them.

This quote from the second story pretty much sums up Verizon's handling of updates

"Soon though, it became clear that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update would be the only time that the word “first” would be attached to a Verizon Galaxy Nexus update."

Thanks for sharing those links.
