Samsung Galaxy S5 'Blank SD card' message

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 running 4.4.4 on the G900VVRU1ANK2 kernel, which was supposed to fix this issue, but in my case seems to have caused it. When the problem appeared, I tested the card thoroughly on a PC and other devices. The card works fine. I did a factory reset of my phone which didn't fix the issue. I have tried 2 other brand new cards from 2 other manufacturers and they won't work either. The current card I am using is a brand new 64GB Samsung card. I tried formatting using the FAT file system on my PC and still it won't work. This is clearly either a spontaneously occurring hardware problem or the last update broke it. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to resolve this issue?

Oh boy! This could be a problem. Let's see what's going on and get a fix for you. Does your phone have any physical or liquid damage? How long have you had your Galaxy S5?

No physical or liquid damage. The phone is less than 6 months old. It was

purchased in June of 2014.

Thanks for the information misterdug71. Do you have any problems with saving pictures or anything when this message is displaying? Any problems using the camera?

I initially had problems with the default camera app not being able to save

to the external SD card, yes. However, at this point, I can't even mount an

SD card. The camera app is now saving the phone's internal memory.

I have the same issue after installing Verizon's latest GS5 android update (KTU84P.G900VVRU1ANK2). I did not have this problem before the update, the device is in pristine condition, and I have already tried all of the same troubleshooting steps referred to above, including a factory reset, different cards, and verifying that the cards do work on other devices, which is why I did not start a new thread, only to be asked the same questions already asked of this customer, and many others on several other threads.

I sat through nearly ten hours of running file recovery software, praying for any ray of hope, only to get back the empty folders where my files used to be. I have lost six months worth of irreplaceable photos and videos, including my son's tenth birthday and Christmas. I am now a very, very unhappy customer, and I need answers, not more questions!

I do apologize if I seem a bit harsh, as I know this is not your fault, personally. You are just in the unfortunate position of having to take the heat for someone else's mistakes, which I have to do all the time at my job, but someone over there needs to do something about this.

Improvement? The Software Repair Assistant has been stuck at 66% for four hours now. I did a google search to see if anyone else has had the same issue, and found them abundant. According to the advice these customers received from Verizon's customer support I am to "(a) to get a new phone or (b) go to a store, and be sure not to turn off the phone" Galaxy s4 "software upgrade assistant" frozen at 66% (original thread deleted by vzw?).

The former is a complete insult. Why should I have to buy a new phone, after being directed by Verizon Customer Support to use Verizon's (NOT Samsung's) repair software to fix a problem created by Verizon's (NOT Samsung's) device software update, only to get my $600 phone bricked?

The latter wasted the customer's valuable time, only to be told by the customer service rep. at the store that "he knew nothing about how to fix the phone and suggested I go to a company that fixes phones", and he was told that "he had never heard of the Verizon Software Assistant!"

This is wholly unacceptable!

My investigation around these errors suggests that this is neither excusive

to Samsung or to Verizon. I suspect it is a problem with the Android OS.

Reinstalling the OS in my case hadn't helped at all. I know that KitKat

introduced changes that were designed to reduce access to the SD card,

supposedly for security reasons.

Some of those changes will be reversed when Lollipop is released. However,

I have no idea whether this will fix these issues. I hope so since I rather

like my S5 in spite of these issues.

Regardless, the SD card issues are not all that rare and there are some

that believe that there is a move afoot by Android to phase out phones with

SD cards as they impact sales of higher end models that mainly offer more

storage space on the phone. It is similar to the move to make the batteries

unremovable to prevent people from replacing factory batteries with after

market batteries with longer life.

Not sure what to do at this point except wait for Lollipop to come out and

see how it goes.
