Sim Card initializing issue...

When I try to change what contacts to display in my address book I get this pop up that says Sim Card initializing... and it will just sit there and nothing happens. I had to reset my phone and I have all these contacts that I don't want to see in my adress book. Is there a way to fix it? Other then this and sucky signal I have had since the last update the phone works fine. I just want to be to able to use this feature in my address booK. Anyone else having the same issue?

This is an odd occurance to have with your contacts. What make/model phone do you have? How do you get the notification to go away? If you could share some additional information, that will help. Thank you.

I have a note 3 and when it pops up it has ok button. I'm waiting for a new sim card to see if they will fix my issue But this issue started from day one with the new nfc sim card. If I knew how to post a screen shot of what I'm getting I would post it.

The problem occurs when the setting "Contacts to display" is selected. A window opens that says "SIM card initializing...". The only way to make it go away is to select "OK" on the window. The phone never gets to the list of contact sources.

My phone is a GS4 Mini. However, on searching for this problem it seems there is a long history on numerous Samsung models. My GS5 has never done this before or after using a foreign SIM or with or without a SIM lock.

The phone initially worked fine. I then added a SIM lock. The problem occurred after that. I removed the SIM lock and it still occurred. I removed and re-installed the SIM and it still occurs.

We definitely want to make sure your phone works great for you! It's very important that you're able to manage your contacts. Are you able to try turning the phone off, removing the SIM, and then putting that back in and turning it back on? What do you do when this happens to get it working again?

I, too, am experiencing the same phenomenon. On a stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3, using the gmail-based contact list, while attempting to only display one set of contacts a dialog box appears with "SIM card initializing...". I've had this phone for two weeks now and it did this upon first use and continues to do so. I've tried removing the SIM after powerdown, restarting with & without the SIM installed. Cache was cleared. Took book to the VZW store where I received it and they couldn't help, either. The only option is to press "OK" and letting the device sit for 10+ minutes didn't have a positive result, either. I don't use many apps, and I don't believe I have anything installed that would interfere with this process. The phone is now using update_SM-N900V-NC4_to_NK1 from Feb 21; this is Android 4.4.4 and hardware version N900V.07. I'm clearly not alone in this frustration. Thanks for any help!

I too am having this problem with a stock Verizon s3. Any help would be appreciated.

I just received my replacement phone and it's doing the same thing. I think Verizon needs to call up Samsung and figure this out because this is becoming a headache.

I received my GS4 via mail from Verizon store brand new in mid-March. I tried to play with my contact lists and see the same issue as with other folks here. I hit "Contacts to display" and then "SIM card initializing.." appears. I hit OK to clear the pop-up but the feature to select contacts to display did not come up. My old S3 (from Sprint) didn't have this issue. Here are my phone details:

I tried it in safe mode and the I still get the sim card initializing error

I too am having this same problem with a Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545).

This started after my phone quit connecting to 4G, only 3G worked.

Took the phone to the Verizon store (February 28, 2015) and they put a new SIM card in and I left. A few days later I noticed the "SIM card initializing..." problem.

I went back to the Verizon store (March 3, 2015) they reset phone back to factory, pulled the micro SD card and tried 3 more SIM cards. All produced the same problem. Contacted Verizon support and they sent out a new phone. It arrived March 5, 2015 and did the SAME thing. Went back to Verizon store and tried 2 more SIM cards. Called Verizon support again and the tech found in Verizon's "internal" forum an issue related to the "SIM card initializing..." problem which was started February 25, 2015. In that forum it was noted that "this is not a problem with the phone, DO NOT send a phone replacement". The support person thought it might be the batch of SIM cards that the store had, so Verizon sent me a SIM card replacement, which arrived March 10, 2015. That card does the same thing.

My mother has the exact same phone as I do, we purchased them together two years ago. She still has her original SIM. We swapped SIM cards and the problem swaps with the SIM card. This appears to be a SIM card issue, what was changed with them? Is it possible to get an older SIM made back in 2014 or 2013?

Another thing to note, the contacts also periodically stops. An error message saying "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped." This is quite annoying and if you are in a call when this happens, it drops the call.

I have found a temporary “workaround” to this problem.

Turn “Airplane” mode on
Restart the phone (it should start in “Airplane” mode)
Contacts->Contacts to display (You may have to try it several times)
Turn “Airplane” mode off
Contacts to Display seems to show every time until restart.

Just turning on “Airplane” mode without the restart does not seem to work.

This workaround seems to work for me, until the phone is restarted or powered off and back on again without being in “Airplane” mode.

It does not fix the Contacts crash. That still randomly comes up.

I know this is a Galaxy Note 3 forum, but it's the only forum that comes up when searching "SIM card initializing".

Thanks for providing such thorough details, Mack3557. When you notice the "SIM card initializing..." do you recall accessing anything in particular shortly before that occurs? Do you generally use the Contacts to Display option to locate contacts and place your calls? Have you saved any contacts onto the SIM? If you have, how many? Are there other contacts synced on device like from Google, Facebook, Email etc.?

I have a new Samsung Tab 4 and have experienced this same problem. The SIM card has been changed, and we have even tried a new tablet, but the problem continues. When the SIM card is removed, I can then choose which contacts to display, but as soon as the card is reinserted the problem occurs again. I use a 3rd party app (Deja Office) to sync contacts and calendar to Outlook and they believe this problem is also the source of numerous duplicate contacts. Just to be sure, we tried the Contacts to Display choice BEFORE the DejaOffice app was installed and the SIM card initializing message still appeared. This problem did not occur with my older Galaxy Tab and does not appear to be an issue on my S6 phone. I tried the Airplane Mode workaround and while it did solve the problem while in Airplane Mode, as soon as I turned off Ariplane Mode the problem re-occurred. I use my tablet extensively for work and this is becoming a real problem.
