My google contacts are not syncing since late Feb. 2014. I am now running KitKat and still contacts aren't syncing. Calendar and all other Gmail items are syncing well. Have tried hard reset, removed and reinstalled Gmail account. Turned off sync and restarted sync. Tried with pulling battery and restarting all the previous. Nothing seems to work. HELP!?!?!?!

I know this is a frustrating issue Eteaneck. Ensuring your contacts are saved properly is important. What error message are you receiving when you attempt to sync the contacts? Have you tried downloading the contacts to the cloud? Here is some information about the cloud http://vz.to/IsygQ6 .

Sorry to tell you this suggestion is of no use. My phone's contacts are 3 months old. I'm trying to sync from my Google account on my desktop (which is current) to my phone. I'm not trying to back up my contacts on my phone, which are 3 months old!!!

Do the contacts on the desktop match the contacts on your Gmail/Google account when you view it from a web browser? If not, you might have to manually export the contacts from desktop and import into the Google account.
Is sync from the phone to the Google servers working properly? You can view on the phone if the sync is working within the account settings under the main phone settings.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Yes, on my desktop, my Google Contacts are perfect when viewing in my browser. Also, I have no problem exporting all my contacts to my desktop as a Google "cvs" file. However, when I sent the cvs file to my Samsung S4, the contacts app would not allow it to be imported. Apparently on the S4 the format is not acceptable.
The sync function on my S4 is working for all Google features (like Gmail and Calendar as well as all else) except for syncing contacts. I've removed the Goggle account and re-installed it. I've unchecked sync, cleared cache and data and just about anything any of the techies have proposed and then re-checked sync for contacts and I have been getting the same error message "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Same message since late February of this year.
I have spent in excess of 6 hours speaking with various Verizon tech support people and I have as well as with Google Android support. Google tells me that they see no problems and it's a Verizon issue. Meanwhile Verizon tells me the phone is working fine and it's a Google hiccup and I should have Google fix it. Seems nobody is taking responsibility.
I have a tough time understanding how Verizon can continue to charge me for a service which they are not providing. I'm hurt being their long time customer and they seem not to care. Quite a disappointment. My renewal is in another 11 months and I'm stuck with a defective product for which nobody is taking responsibility!

I have the same problem and have tried the same solutions as you (above). When I reset and clear cache and data for both Contact applications then power down and reboot, eventually the Contacts try to sync.... but not successfully and no "last Sync date" appears if I look at Google account sync. Verizon backup is disabled.
Also a contact list is downloaded from somewhere and placed on my phone, but it is apparently not from Google contacts- as it is incomplete or out of date. I'm trying to figure where the phone might be pulling this from?
Any updates on a solution to the problem?
