Tapping a missed call should take me to recent calls screen

A small annoyance: When a missed call shows up, I should be able to tap on it and the phone should take me to the "recent calls" screen so I can immediately call the person back. But the phone takes me to the keypad.rather than to the recent call screen. Is there any way to change this default?

I don't think so. I think all it does is open the dialer app (which includes recent calls). If the dialer was last open on the keypad (I would think this is usually the case for most people), it will go back to there. At the top of the screen when the dialer is open, however, should be a tab with something resembling a clock on it. Pressing that will take you to the call log.
