Text messaging sound and vibration notifications no longer working while in the messaging app.

Today my recently updated S4 has stopped playing the notification sound, or vibrating, when a new message comes in while I have the messaging window open. It does ding me if the window is closed. I have not changed any settings and it was working find up til now. What gives?

It's important that you receive new message notifications, jlw518. Which messaging app do you use? When you receive a message while in the app, does a notification for a new message still appear in the status bar, just without any vibration/sound?
