How do I set this up? Do I need a separate service? I tried tethering & portable hotspot under Settings and it tells me I need to subscribe to Mobile Hotspot/Mobile Broadband Direct.

Settings > more > tethering&portable hotspot > pick from usb, wifi or bluetooth. | with the wifi option notice just under the wifi setup press and setup a passwd. Back out and then press/check portable wifi hotspot.
Any option works Ive used/use them on the go from time to time w/my nexus 7.
You do not need to pay extra it comes w/your account, if you kept your unlimt data make use of it before they yank it away from you.
hope that helped... enjoy

If the OP still has the unlimited data plan, they still need to add and pay for the mobile hotspot feature.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
