Verizon Censors Internet

I just bought a couple of Fascinates and the first thing I want to install is Google Earth - my favorite program. The page is http://m.google.com/earth and it is blocked by Verizon. They also have blocked the Android Market and only provide a version on the phone that effectively censors your ability to get many useful, if not necessary, free apps. Good luck with that. I'm returning these phones tomorrow.

Would that be the same on all Verizons phones or just some like the Fasinate? That is crap because I love Google Earth too and would have downloaded it.

Thats ABSOLUTE **bleep**!!!!
I have G-Earth on my Fascinate and it works fine. Quit trying to download it from the web and locate it in A-Market and install it.
And then APOLOGIZE for saying something as ridiculous as "Verizon censors the internet"

yeah Verizon isn't controlling the apps in the market. There's apparently a random glitch that causes google earth to not appear sometimes though. And you can always side load the app by looking for it online. Google is your friend.

I don't know about being crap but I cannot download GOOGLEARTH on my fascinate. I was able to download google earth on my first fascinate, however that phone was determined defective (per VW) and they sent me another one (re-cert). This phone will not download google earth, not to mention the fact that google earth is not even listed in the app market on this phone. After contacting VW tech about this, they determined that this phone cannot and does not have the ability to download google earth. NOW THIS IS CRAPPPPP!!!!! Also, when I try to download anything in the App Brain there is no "install" to actually install the app. Now go figure that one!!!!!

Google blocks download of third party apps outside the marketplace by default (including their own) You can change this block by going to settings and changing your download security. For what it is worth, google earth is available in the marketplace and works just fine on the Fascinate. Your post is way off base. {please keep your posts courteous}

Crimedoggies, the link the OP posted tracks back to the marketplace link for Google Earth. While I believe he was indeed spouting off without all of the necessary information, it's odd that he couldn't access Google Earth from the market.
Possibly related, I cannot download Google Earth either. However, I am running DJ05 software build, not DI01, so I just assumed that was the culprit.

And as an addendum, OP's not the only one...

That being said... to say Big Red censors the internet is just so crazy. Plus he made a previous rambling post essentially spouting some conspiracy theory in a previous posting.
Here's my take on a LOT of the issues I read in this forum when it comes to Verizon:
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SALES REP AS THEY ARE CLOSING THE DEAL... you have 30 days to bring the phone back if NOT COPLETELY SATISFIED!!! Exercise your right to do so.
DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY your handset!!! If handset "A" has features that handset "B" does not have then decide what features you absolutely have to have and choose accordingly.
And finally get over your sense of entitlement. YOU KNEW (if you did #2 above) what the phone was and was not capable of and WHAT SOFTWARE VERSION it had when you bought it, and YOU BOUGHT IT ANYWAY and KEPT IT PAST THE 30 DAYS. Now is not the time to complain that the process to get a software upgrade is (IYHO) taking to long.
Just my .02
I have been a customer of big red for 15 years and I have bought out of my contract to go to ATT because of being a MAC guy and wantin an iPhone... ATT SUX!! trust me because I bought out of that contract and came back.

Rick, I completely agree with you on every point (including AT&T; I did the same thing).
I would like your take on something though.. The car and desk docks for the Fascinate all have USB Audio capability that is currently not available until our 2.2 update. I've seen some of the test builds for Froyo for the other Galaxy S devices, and these builds still do not offer that capability to their native docks.
Understanding that those weren't official, if we receive a 2.2 update and the docks can still not handle audio out, do you believe the users that bought these accessories (I have three total) have a right to complain? Also, do you think that promising this functionality with the 2.2 update infers that we should receive such an update, or am I the fool for buying something with a sticker on it that says, "Will work someday"?
While most of the gripes are unfounded (primarily this thread and most of the "WHY BING?!?!" threads), I don't know that 30 days is really sufficient, especially when rumors fly like crazy that keep you holding on just a couple more weeks while the actual release date gets pushed back. "Oh, we're aware of the GPS problem!" "A fix is coming!" You like the phone itself, because it's a marvel of a device, and the lingering things that would otherwise have been deal breakers you excuse because a fix is on the way. By the time you realize a fix is NOT on the way, you're way past your 30 days.
Fascinate users have a right to be upset about certain things. There *IS* a GPS fix. I have it. Verizon, for reasons way beyond me, has chosen not to release it. I don't know what the status of the Froyo update is at this point, but not releasing software build DJ05 and its improved radio to their devices was one of those things that has had me scratching my head for a few weeks now.

ANDY... I will concede on the point of the dock and accessories. If VZW sold you a device AND an ACCESSORY that you cannot use, then you should have the right to at least bring the accessory back for a refund.I am 100% with you on that.
Having said that, THAT is a valid VZW customer service issue. You purchased a product and you cannot use it. But the phone itself works. Unlike a lot of the WHINING post's that I read on this forum.
I don't use the dock and to be honest I am not even "up" on what it does and does not do (I just know it's on my phone)
As far as the GPS is concerned. I bought a phone NOT a GPS. Should it work? In a word...Yes Have they addressed the issue? Yes, in the firmware update it should work.
Again, I don't use my phone as a GPS device (I have a stand alone) so I cannot say how well it works or not. I have used it with google maps for walking directions a couple of times searching for a restaurant near a hotel while on biz trips and it seemed to work fine.

Who knows with Verizon but they're getting a lot of angry customers in the process. The original DJ05 update leak that was floating around on IRC was apparently fairly buggy iirc. Not sure what, if anything, the developers at xda did to it last week but the now publicly available DJ05 is pretty much flawless and should have been what the Fascinate was released with back in September. I don't have the media dock and Flash doesn't concern me so I'm quite content with my phone now that it has working GPS and the back light on the soft touch buttons doesn't go off after 5 seconds now. It's a good thing that the Fascinate runs 2.1 probably the best of any device, otherwise I'm sure a lot would have gone back within their 30 days. Samsung and Verizon should work with the developers and I'd almost bet that they'd have a perfect froyo rom in less than a week.

True, but who wants to bet Bing wouldn't be part of that ROM?

Its the dock issue that burns me the most. GPS, Flash, etc I can tolerate those issues. The Bing thing I never understood. Why buy the phone if Bing offends you that much?!? Also, I would think the type of person that is offended by Bing should also be knowledgable enough to be able to De-Bing it rather easily using Launcher Pro free version and about 5 minutes of time. Its not like the average non-techie Joe gives a crap that Bing is his default search engine.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
