When connected to wifi my 4G stays lit up, not the arrows, just the 4G.

I have reset phone, turned off and on and all that jazz and still remains lit up regardless of what wifi I am connected to. Wifi must be working as the bulk of my data is from there not my plan but this isnt an issue on my husbands new phone. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it's a known issue with the S5 and S4 since the 4.4 update. Verizon doesn't have a fix for it yet.

There is no "issue". So there is no fix.

Same thing happened to me. I was able to resolve it by turning off the Caller Name ID app in the Verizon folder. Simply unchecked everything in the Settings area and made sure it was disabled. The 4G icon immediately dimmed out as normal.
Now that I think about it, the 4G light stayed lit when the app start my trial for service.

jennyetn, thanks for your patience and cooperation with us to get this issue device issue resolved. Try disabling data on your device in Settings>Mobile Data> tap the box to remove the check. You will then need to connect to your Wi-Fi to verify if the 4G is still lit. Keep us posted.

I upgraded my wife's phone and mine at the same time and we both got the Galaxy S5. When my phone is connected to our wifi, the 4G icon grays out, when my phone is connected, the 4G icon stays lite. I've done a factory reset and started from scratch, but it still happens. Verizon, what's up?

Thank you for messaging, rsisley. I have one explanation, but there are definitely a few different things that can cause this. The most common being that if you have certain Verizon Apps active or services, the 4G icon will either still appear or will turn on even while on WiFi. The apps that can affect this are services that only work through our network. These include Backup Assistant, certain caller ID features etc. These should be the only basic apps that use data during that time.
This step can help make sure that apps are working as intended. I recommend wiping your phones cache partition. This can be accessed by performing these steps:http://vz.to/1uorSMg Once you get to step 4, do not wipe data/factory reset. Please choose wipe cache partition. Once done, choose reboot. Let us know if you notice a difference.
Also as Lasina, and others have suggested, disabling mobile data while on WiFi helps make sure other apps are not using mobile data while on WiFi.

I've been told that after the update, both the wifi and data connections are active to allow the device to pick from the fastest connection. I don't know if this is correct or just a bug, but that decision should left up to the owner. Manually going in and turning off the data connection is an option, but not a very good one as you might forget to turn it back on.
Here's what I did to work around it. I downloaded Automatelt and created a rule that turns off the data when there is a wifi connection. I then created another rule that turns the data back on when the wifi is disconnected. Don't use the toggle option, as its not as reliable.

Verizon, any new information? I got my Galaxy S6 and as I type, I can see the 4G icon working away while on home wifi. I also caught it taking the downloads for YouTube and Instagram on videos whole at home again with wifi on, verified in the Data Usage dialogue shows spokes for both. Now I'm paranoid and staring at it constantly because I've burned through my data plan. This doesn't make any sense. Tried stopping all apps possible... The only thing that works is to keep turning it off, it's like having a phone from 10 years ago, frustrating!
I could swear during setup it asked if I wanted to allow this behavior, to swap over if wifi was unstable... Where is that setting? Any other help?

I just got off the phone with Verizon as well, and while my customer service rep was quite pleasant, unfortunately she was unable to offer me an explanation that is satisfactory as to why after a recent over the air update last week to my GS5 that the 4G symbol remains lit up while connected to wifi. She even went to the length to call Samsung for me and came back saying that she was told it is just like that now and that the 4G, though lit up, should not be transmitting data if connected via WiFi. I am going to manually toggle off my mobile connection while on wifi, but it used to toggle on(turn white)/off(gray out) automatically, so this inconvenience is definitely annoying and hopefully Verizon will be able to fix this issue. I'm sorry there are so many people on this thread, but it is nice to know I'm not alone. Please fix this soon Verizon or loyal customers will be forced to look elsewhere.

After 2 days into my cycle, i registered 75% more data usage with Verizon then the Samsung S6 data usage screen had recorded. Verizon went and verified their total was correct and closed the ticket, surmising the device is using more than it records and referred me to Samsung. So far, we have: 1) Forgot the main wifi connection and restablished. 2) Boo up in Safe Mode, verify all apps are able to run off WiFi only (not sure how that is different than shutting of mobile data). 3) Wipe the cache partition.
Now I am supposed to wait and compare data usage in a few days again. Sounds like guesswork to me. Will let u know if I discover anything.

Also should let everyone the Samsung rep was dismayed and irritated that I could infer both the WiFi and 4G icon arrows would work at the same time... I have a screenshot proving this now, but be ready for that argument if you are trying to work with them.
I've also determined that the Message + application from Verizon, establishes a 4G connection and passes data each time an SMS is sent. (with WiFi connected) This seems likely to be a culprit. Guessing there is sending/sent/received communication going on over mobile data. I have message+ with desktop companion enabled.

I just switched my message app from the verizon message + to the regular message app - hopefully that helps. Yes, I was shocked with my data usage! I was home recovering from surgery and on WIFI the whole 5 days and my data jumped up an enormous amount. This is not ok at all. New phone should not cause these new problems. Thanks for the updates. This is very disappointing!

This post is older but I have the S8 and I couldn't figure out why 4G was still lit up even though I was connected to Wi-Fi ( after the fact it was never on before since yesterday) Well yesterday I turned on caller ID with name and then I went and shut it off just a few minutes ago and it went away... Just shut caller ID with name off
