I discovered today that when I am one of the recipients in a group message, the message is received as a MMS. I am given the option to download it, but it never downloads.

Thank you, yes, I discovered that having the mobile data turned off was the problem.
The problem, as noted below, was that I had mobile data turned off. In an attempt to curb my data usage, now that Verizon has made me switch to the stupid "More Everything Plan," I had turned off my mobile data, which apparently prevented me from reading any messages that I received that were sent out as a group text. The More Everything Plan sucks, to be quite honest.
