Why do I keep getting a notification tone without a notification?

Since the latest lollipop update, I have gotten multiple (per hour) text notification tones without the icon or a text message. It's beyond annoying.

I was just about to write the exact same question, and then make the comment that others have made... which is that with every software update on the GS5, what was once a really decent device is has become an aggravating device that I will only use until I earn an upgrade. Then it's goodbye Samsung... And maybe so long Verizon - I don't have time for this.

It goes way beyond frustrating and aggravating.

Following up on my initial post. I contacted both Samsung and Verizon customer support. Both suggested I delete all gmail accounts linked to the specific tone I was hearing. I deleted both, then emptied the cache again, rest the battery, restarted / rebooted, then added the same accounts back the phone. And then, wouldn't you know it, the tone continued. Every minute or two without failure. Perfect.
Anybody at Verizon have any other ideas? Or do I live without emails on my flagship phone? Help us - please!!!!

JimTahoe,
Hearing random tones for phantom emails would drive me crazy! I appreciate all that you have done so far to help get this resolved. Let's see what else we can do. My best recommendation at this point would be to reset your entire phone and not add anything back on right away. You can always go back on later and add apps, emails, contacts, etc. But this will be a way to determine what is exactly happening. Random tones like this are definitely difficult to pin point. To reset the device you would want to follow these steps: http://vz.to/1pI3Ifu. Please keep us posted on what your findings are after the reset is completed.

Well, I understand your position in this. You didn't send out this update. I guess when I have time I'll back-up everything, do as you ask, then spend a few hours resetting my phone back to what it was before this minor update. Let's hope it works. It's also sending calls directly to voice mail now. Well, sometimes. Sometimes not. Big fun.
Regardless of what happens when I take these steps, a message to Samsung - and I know they don't care - goodbye. Maybe I'll come back someday, after you hire a few real software engineers. Decent coders know one simple rule - don't make stuff worse. Oops.

Thank you for making me feel not so insane. I do remember my device doing this and I thought I was going crazy; it didn't happen as often as it seems to be happening to you.
I tried a few things, but something I'd suggest is going into:
settings>storage>cached data and select OK and restart your device
See if that helps.

Is the tone one of your notification tones? I have mine set to be different for certain things so perhaps try and backtrack it to an associated app.

It is the specific tone for text notifications; I've checked the other
applications as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you have any text threads you want to keep, back those up.
Then go into settings>application>application manager>message+ (assuming that is the messaging service you use)
delete the cache, delete the data and restart your device.

Thanks. I'll have to try that tonight when I can back them up.

I don't know for certain it deletes your threads, but I always say to back them up JUST in case.
I should clarify, just back up your text messages, it doesn't have to be your whole device. It will only delete message+ data.
