Why does my device say I don't have data service?

My phone says it has no mobile data service and I'm in service areas.

How long have you been having trouble with the mobile data connection? When do you get the error that there's no service? What's recently changed on your phone (settings, new apps or updates)? Thank you very much for answering me. I ended using Software Upgrade Assistant to repair my phone’s software. That seemed to do the trick.
