It's very hard to determine read and unread emails. is there a way to darken emails that have been read?

I am using the stock email. There is barely a difference between the color of read and unread emails. I want to darken the read emails.
The unread emails have a bolded subject line; read is normal font. It's quite easy to distinguish the bold from the normal - perhaps changing your default font? Or maybe a different theme would give you more options?
