Notifications are not coming through but the screen lights up in all it's bright glory and wakes me up. Shouldn't the screen stay dark until out of DND mode?

I definitely don’t want to see your sleep continue to be disturbed, SDUNN0813. The Do Not Disturb setting is created so your phone will not make noise when the feature is active, essentially controlling the same settings you see in Sounds And Vibration in your phone. The screen lighting up would be part of the screen wake and will light up based on your settings at https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-203723/
