galaxy s5 not downloading picture messages

I got my Galaxy S5 in May, and was soo happy with it. A few software updates and I'm about to throw it against the wall. Now it won't download Picture messages. I just get a link in the message screen that says download and I hit it and it tries to download and cant. And this happens over and over. I restart the phone and try again. Same thing. I was told a new software update is coming soon that should fix all problems with this phone. 2 updates ago my phone started to overheat and not charge every single day. Then the update to fix the bluetooth issue rolled out and that problem stopped. Now I am having this issue with picture messages. I had a Galaxy s3 and loved it, I wish I hadn't sold it or I would so go back to it.

alleria, I'm sorry to learn that your phone is unable to download picture messages. We don't want you to throw your phone, we want to fix it. Do you experience any trouble when sending a picture message? When attempting to download a picture message, are you connected to WiFi or 4G?

I am connected to Wifi with the phone. I do sometimes have a hard time sending picture messages and it will just keep trying to send and I just end up deleting it and giving up. This doesn't happen all the time though, the same with downloading them. Just a few moments ago I got a picture message and it downloaded right away.. but last night one wouldn't download. I made sure mobile data was turned on.

Thank you for the details. Are you using the factory messaging app when sending and receiving picture messages? Do you notice if this only happens when sending to a particular number?

I am using the factory messaging app, not the verzion + app, but the Samsung messaging app. I really only regularly text 2 people and it has now happened with both of them. Both are on Verzion, one is using an iphone and the other is using a note 4.

Wonderful information. Have you attempted to force close, clear data, and clear cache on the messaging application? http://vz.to/1pcweB3 Have you also completely deleted the threads of messages from the 2 numbers and started a new thread to see if the issues persist?

I have having similar issues. Some people can't open or receive the pics I send and often with my Samsung galaxy s5 I will sometimes get the message that notifies me of a message however it is a grey box that says download and I click it says downloading but just goes back to the original box to download. This is in the Verizon messages. I have had this issue since getting this phone since I got it and I am considering going back to iPhone BUT I am clearly not eligible for upgrade for some time and the cost of the phone is too expensive. Is there a fix?

Hi hurricane11!  Yes what you are experiencing is exactly correct.  Verizon Messages, picture and MMS messages are all sent over the Verizon data network.  A data connection is necessary in order to be able to send these types of messages.  Regular text messages do not require a data connection in order to send properly.  If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to let us know.  Thanks and have a great day!

Does the same happen if you download over 4g? I am using the samsung messaging app that came on the phone and I have to be connected to 4g when I receive picture messages. Even with the other provider I was on you had to use 4g to send and receive picture messages. I have never been able to do it over wifi and was told I had to be on 4G for that. Mary

Images often refuse to load over the Verizon network unless you have data enabled and available. I am unable to receive images by any other means. This ONLY applies to SMS. If I have exceeded my available data nothing will show in SMS other than TEXT. If data limit is exceeded or turned off the no images will be loaded.
