how do i change to use the dial pad

First make sure your phone is unlocked.

 

I suggest hitting your little "home" key at the bottom (2nd from the left below the Samsung lettering).

 

Then, up and left from the home key (above the Samsung lettering) is the green "Phone" button:  press that.

 

Is that the "dial pad" of which you speak?  Hope so!
