As opposed to a hard reset, if you have a gmail account on the device you can go to the android device manager and force a passcode change.  Here's the link https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager.  I hope this helps you out

Oh no! I can understand wanting to set a passcode, so your kids don't get into your phone. If you still are not able to get into your phone you are going to have to do a "alternative reset" See here: http://vz.to/1yz5DGg . Just be mindful all the information will be gone and will start as a brand new phone. If you have a memory card on your phone, your pictures will be saved. If you have done backup assistant on your phone, that will save your contacts. We are here if you need any additional help.
