I'm not sure how you'd define "hard to text on." I don't text a huge amount of texting, but the stock messaging app does a good job for me. If you mean "hard to type on," that would depend on your typing habits. I came to the S4 from a Samsung Stratosphere, one of the last phones with a slide-out keyboard. I find the onscreen keyboard harder to type on than the slider, and I've tried several keyboard apps. It works, and I'm OK with it, but I liked the physical keyboard better. (I don't find that swiping works that well for me, but it is also available.)
But, as Ann says, there is voice control, i.e., both voice typing and S Voice, which should (but doesn't always) let you say "text Sam" and start a text message to someone named Sam in your contacts.
