Is there a setting to change how long the main screen remains open.

Yes.

You can click on the Menu button from your home screen.  Then select Settings and then Sound and display and then scroll down and select Screen timeout and select the length of time you want your screen to stay on.

Please note though that if you set it to a longer period of time (you can have the screen stay on for 30 minutes), it will drain your battery a lot faster than if you have it set for a shorter period of time.
