When I had Sprint and got a new phone and wasn't given the option of choosing my number, I signed up for a new google voice phone number and then ported it to the new cell phone. Verizon may allow you to port in a new number sooner then changing your existing number and you get to choose your new number (from a pool of available numbers). I think I paid a $10 port fee to do so though.
