Phone asks for pin when trying to unlock, setup for fingerprint to unlock

After the most recent update of my galaxy s7 after pressing the home or power button and trying to unlock the phone with the fingerprint sensor, the phone always asks for the pin to be entered for additional security. I went through all the settings to make sure it was setup for fingerprint unlock and it was, so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

A lockscreen replacement app will override the default security settings.

Somehow it isn't registering the fingerprint so it is asking for the backup password?

It acts like it's not even attempting to use the fingerprint sensor, when I press the power or home button to turn on the unlock screen, it says swipe to unlock and then immediately asks for the pin. One out of ten tries it will say place finger on sensor to unlock. That's the way it would work before the last Verizon update to the phone. Not sure what changed and why it works sometimes. Frustrating

Delete your fingerprint then set up a new one, maybe even using a different finger.

When you say shut down, do you mean the phone powered off and restarted, or simply turning off the screen and locking the phone, in order to unlock again it now requires the pin? If so then what's the point of the fingerprint sensor?

Anytime you shutdown the phone (power off) then restart the phone, you must use a pin code or unlock pattern to compete the bootup. After the phone goes into sleep mode use the fingerprint scanner (push and hold home key for one second) to unlock the phone. The only time I use unlock pattern is on phone startup.

That's the problem I'm having it doesn't always give me the option to use my fingerprint to unlock the phone. It immediately asks for a pin what it says additional security. It didn't behave this way before I updated the phone. I only would have to use the pin on start-ups, now 9 out of 10 times that i try to unlock the phone, I can only do so with a pin and once in a while it unlocks with a fingerprint. Not sure if a factory reset might be needed to resolve the issue.

Axelmx5, the security of your device is our first priority. Did you recently update the software on your phone? If so, did you power it off/on to soft reset it?

Let's try disabling the screen lock and starting fresh. Tap Settings>Locak Screen and Security>Screen lock type> Tap None.
