International Text messages

I have frequent problems with texting to and from the Philippines, Manilla. Do I do the *228 update? Yes, frequently. Do I take out my battery and re-boot my phone? Yes, every few days.

My problems: delayed texts. My friend says I sent you a text at 10PM (my time). By 12 midnight I still have not received it. The next morning I see the text has arrived, and the phone says that I received it at 10PM!

Or, a friend says I sent you a text, but I never receive the text.

Or, a friend says I sent you a text this morning. I don't receive the text until about 4 hours later, and it is correctly labeled with the actual time I receive it. Then, a few minutes later, I receive the exact same text again!

Any comments or suggestions about these texting problems will be appreciated.

*228 option number 2 to update your roaming capabilities is always recommended before your travel out of the country, or every 90 days even if you stay in the states so you're phone sees all of its cell towers. You can't do a *228 update outside the U.S., or while in the U.S. on an extended network. Your phone's signal indicator should say 1X/EVDO or 3G in order to update your roaming capabilities.

I doubt that delayed text messages has anything to do with *228. International text messaging requires a handoff from the VZW network to the cell carrier in the foreign country and vice versa. I suspect the problem lies with the Filipino carrier.

The time stamp on when you receive the message may have to do with the local time of your phone when the message was sent from your friend, not the actual receipt time. This is related to the handoff between cell carriers.

Duplicates is another thing. It appears that the Filipino carrier is duplicating the message. Does your friend get duplicates of your messages? You can try contacting VZW tech support to see if your line is provisioned correctly in the switch. They may need to file a trouble ticket to investigate this further. Contact technical support from a different phone, have yours with you, at 800-922-0204 or *611 from a different VZW mobile.
