Traded in my phone and two months later Verizon says the box was empty and are essentially chargin me $700

I've read several stories online about this. Has anyone had the company resolve it for you?

I traded in my perfect-condition iphone 12 for an iphone 15 for my daughter. In fact - I did it on the suggestion that a Verizon employee made to me. I shipped it back immediately in the packaging provided and with the label provided once I received the new phone. I received confirmation that it was shipped and tracked the phone. I saw it was delivered to the warehouse in Indiana and all was well. This was in June.

It is now late August and I receive a message saying my $700 credit will now be rescinded because they never got the phone. Figuring it's a simple misunderstanding, I contact customer support where they track it and see it was delivered and tell me the BOX WAS EMPTY and NO CREDIT. What in the world. Then someone at the warehouse stole it. I'm supposed to take their word for it that the box was empty? And why would I send an empty box when I wanted the credit? And why if it was empty as they claim was I not contacted immediately requesting I send the phone? What in the world is going on? 

I'm a longtime customer and carry 5 lines a month with this company. The customer service yesterday would not resolve this for me and ultimately disconnected me. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED SUCH A THING?

I sent them my perfectly good phone, THEY stole or LOST it. And now they're saying I owe them $700 over it?
