I'm not receiving all of the content of the text messages sent to me. They're being cut off in mid-word. Is there a maximum number of characters allowed in a text message?

Yes the amount of characters is 160 and that is counting spaces. Usually if you go over that amount the characters over 160 will go through on a second message. I believe but not really sure that verizon to verizon texts can go over the 160 limit.
This was post by Suzy Q back in Febuary, maybe this will help you. Re: Can I increase number of characters in texts?
If you are able to send picture messages, and your recipient can receive picture messages (MMS) then send it that way. You don't have to attach a picture, and you are allowed 1000 characters. Just choose picture message, and don't choose a picture, and type your long message in the text field. Also a picture message is counted as a text message, you don't need a data plan and it is not charged as data when you send it as a picture message.

Thank you minniehaha for your information. Adding to what was stated, it is important to note the type of phone you have, foxsib3.
If you have a feature phone, you are able to receive only 160 characters per message. If the person from whom you are receiving the message has a feature phone, you will only receive 160 characters at a time, and the remainder of the message will be sent as a second text as foxsib3 explained.
If you have a Smartphone and are able to receive a text message of over 160 characters but if the person has a feature phone, they can send only 160 and the message you receive will be sent in two parts. Some phones are able to send only 160 characters and will not send the remaining letters/words and your message could be cut off mid-word as you described.
In closing, I too recommend the use of a picture message when sending longer texts, or of course have the person writing you send their messages as picture messages, and you will be able to receive longer texts that should not be shortened.
Thanks,
