Cyan update status changed to "under development". What does that mean?

Microsoft support site has changed th status of the cyan update for all Verizon windows phones to "under development".

All other phones say "available" or "under testing". What does "under development" mean versus "under testing". Does this mean we are going backwards with the update instead of forwards? :-(

This means that Verizon has decided that they want their software apps to work flawlessly with the new firmware update before they will grant approval of it, so they sent it back to Microsoft to "develop changes" to the firmware that will work well with their apps. I found this out just today in a 3 way conference call between Nokia, Verizon and myself. Nokia admits that they are "re-developing" the software to work with Verizon's apps (My Verizon, VZ Navigator, Voicemail, etc.)

If you ask me, this is either plain STUPIDITY, or Verizon once again trying to squash the Windows Phone platform. These are APPs, not part of the operating system. These apps can be changed AFTER the Cyan firmware is delivered. There is absolutely NO reason the Cyan firmware has to be delayed for APPs! However, Verizon has decided they will not approve the firmware for delivery until their apps work "PERFECTLY" on the Cyan firmware update.

If this is what they are doing for the Cyan firmware update, how long do you think it will take them to deliver the Denim firmware update. I'm quite sure I'll be enjoying my Denim firmware update on my Lumia 1520 over on AT&T by then!

What a cluster #@!%#@. I'm guessing that Microsoft/VZW cannot get XLTE and VoLTE working properly. If they would have started this way back in July they might have had it finished by now.

I'm hoping that what ever is being fixed in Cyan can be ported over to Denim being it hasn't been officially released yet.

Part me is hoping that they are working on both firmwares in conjunction....

Wow so VZW can't even code their own apps (VZW Navigator (waste of money), My Verizon, and Visual Voice (another piece of garbage app) and has to have Microsoft do it for them... Sad....

They don't code those apps... They are done by a 3rd party developer and branded Verizon. I used to work for companies that do that kind of stuff all the time. We had AT&T and Sprint as clients.

Thanks for the info. Still sad that Microsoft/VZW can't tell the truth and place blame on components that aren't even part of the firmware or OS.

What does it mean? It means we're screwed. It means whatever has to happen to get it working and down to us is not going to happen in the next couple of weeks. Because if we were in the homestretch on it, they wouldn't bother to create a new label called "Under Development." Presumably, the status will also have to change back to "Under Testing" at some point, and we'll (potentially) be right back where we were 4 months ago. This is Microsoft's way of saying "sorry gang, but you're not going to see it any time soon." Until VZW says something to shed more light (not likely), I would assume the worst.

The only reason I can think of Verizon wanting the OS or Cyan update to be changed just for them is to support Verizon changing different options or Verizon embedding apps that cannot be uninstalled without illegally unlocking your phone.

I am guessing that Verizon wants special privileges (rights) to install permanent software or the ability to change (turn off) certain OS features that it deems expensive to Verizon (too much bandwidth) or competing with their private apps. They want more control and Microsoft will bend over backwards for them.

Yep - AT&T, with their network, is going to be my next provider come end of contract.

I don't mind that Verizon is trying make the quality of the code better or put strict standards on Microsoft, but without giving out details on my credentials, I would consider myself an advanced user, so I would like the option to install what firmware and updates that have come out. So if AT&T is buying the most devices as Tidbits says, I definitely will be eyeing them once my contract comes up too. But I don't think Verizon should have to submit something to their user base, granted I only think their "My Verizon" app is useful, I wouldn't want to be Verizon fielding calls from Novice to Intermediate users who have bought a Windows Phone and for whatever reason use Verizon's apps.

So we're all focused on Microsoft/Lumia and VZW delaying the Windows Phone 8.1 + Cyan update....

We're leaving out HTC 8X and the Samsung ATIV SE. There hasn't been any news after HTC tweet that the 8X was going to get the update in late October.

I can understand no news about the ATIV SE, but if the HTC One M8 is 8.1 compliant than there really shouldn't be any delay releasing the update for the 8X. It shouldn't have taken HTC this long to port the changes from One M8 firmware/OS to the 8X.

So I think VZW is really screwing with the Windows Phone ecosystem on purpose and not Microsoft.

On the contrary the 8X delay is in fact HTC. They recently started their beta testing with their evaluate community. They always do a beta prior to submitting anything to Verizon or any carrier for that matter.

In the meantime, Microsoft is pushing out 8.1.1 on Dev Preview today, installing it on my Icon now. Only a matter of time before the firmware for cdma Lumias (lumii?) starts showing up for us 'impatient' types. I don't think Verizon is gonna like that too much (likely will interfere with a revenue stream, the real reason Verizon is balking).

HTC and Motorola does beta testing with the firmware as well. Verizon doesn't care as long it's not their dime.

I have to say that coming from an Android, I was looking forward to WP8 when I bought the Icon in January. Soon after I read about 8.1 coming out. And I waited. Called VZW and I got the "..coming soon..." response. Fine. But no updates. Zero. TERRIBLE customer service. And to sit on the side of the road while Verizon announces all new phones with 8.1 on it zipping by. Not good. And did I mention TERRIBLE customer service in not letting us know what's going on? I have been a vzw customer for over 10 years. This is the WORST experience I've had. It pains me to say that. But as well all know, good customer service goes by unrecognized but one tiny slip and it's the end of the world. So I'll finish here by saying Verizon has been extremely good to me as a customer. But they've screwed the pooch here in a big way. I have a terrible taste in my mouth and may have to brush my teeth with a different toothpaste.

I think what this "Under Development" thing means is that Microsoft decided to help Verizon get its act together, but needed a way to do it that didn't make Verizon look like a bad guy. They wanted to help the whole process, not hinder it by pointing fingers and making people mad and even more reluctant to get the job done than they were.

So the statement gets released "Verizon is making sure everything works correctly with their apps" and Microsoft sends over their team to help.

Hopefully this will speed the process for this update - and maybe it will mean closer ties between Microsoft and Verizon, so that future updates get ironed out by the joint team in a smoother, more efficient, and more timely manner.

So, looks like I should just bite the bullet and register for the developer preview program...Could be the 22nd century before we see the next update from Verizon!

Ha ha ha ha!!! You're living in a fantasy world! Trust me, there is BAD blood between Microsoft and Verizon at this point, but Microsoft is taking the high road. They are being the "grown-up." Thank about it though, Verizon got an EXCLUSIVE on a FLAGSHIP device (some would say the best Windows Phone in the United States) that was supposed to be fully supported by Verizon. Instead, they ACTIVELY DISSUADED sales of the device (documentation exists) and then "retired" the device because of "lack of sales." Do you REALLY think Microsoft appreciates this? Do you really think Microsoft isn't fully aware of this? Wake up man!

It really doesn't mean anything. That page is static and is not up to date with what is actually going on internally at Microsoft or Verizon Wireless.

It was released 12/6/2014. My phone auto updated from using Preview for Developers to 8.1. I now have Cortana on my home screen.

jkallinen, Cyan update is firmware, what you received was an Operating System update. Firmware currently requires Verizon approval so that is why people have come to these forums asking where is cyan (firmware) update at...The firmware opens up the ability to use more of the features in the new operating system such as 4K camera on select phones as well as the ability to use currently "greyed out" settings in the preview for dev. version among other things.
