Phone turns off when not used

I just got my Window8 Nokia Lumia 822 and found that it turns completely off (cannot press the button on the side to turn it back on) when not used, i.e. overnight. I have to pop open the back cover, take the battery out, replace the battery and cover and then it will come on. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this or reset the "off" button?

I think it's more than just "turns off when not being used"...I just got my 822 this past monday and it has randomly turned off 4 times already where I had to pull and replace the battery. A couple of times it was overnight, but today it was midday about an hour after I used it. I originally thought it might be the "words with friends" app, that was acting quirky. I uninstalled it a couple of days ago, but that did not help. I just read some other forums where people are having the same issue. I don't know if this is just MS, or Nokia doing updates and it will go away, but I also know that I cannot deal with 2 years of this, so I am heading to the VZ store where I purchased it to either fix it, replace it, or give me something else.

I have the same problem. I don't think it's words with friends as I don't have that app. Same problem, seems to crash when not in use and then requires the battery to be removed in order to turn back on. Hopefully, this gets fixed soon as I'm at risk of missing important calls.

First thing I'd do is a hard reset. Make sure you have any data in your apps backed up that you need (game progress will not back up - angry birds, etc). Sync your pictures. Contacts, if you're using a Microsoft account for contacts, will sync automatically to SkyDrive, so you don't need to worry about them. Go to settings, about, reset your phone, confirm it twice (unless they've changed this from WP7), and the phone will be back to factory in a minute or so. Go back through the setup process, and see if it happens again. If yes, you've most likely got a dud, take it back for exchange, and when they tell you to troubleshoot and they want to hard reset it and see if it happens again, tell them you already have, and this should save you a second trip to the store.

As for reinstalling your apps, there is an app that you can use, but I can't think of the name of it off hand. You can also go to my.windowsphone.com and over over your name, click on purchase history, and click the reinstall link for each app you want to reinstall. Much easier than trying to remember them and search for each one in the Store. Caveat: You may want to take a screenshot of your app list and games list, or write down a list, because due to the recent glitches in the store, I have noticed that not all of my prior purchases showed up in my purchase history.

I am having this problem as well. I have tried the reset and after that didn't work I exchanged my phone for a new 822. Within 24 hours of exchanging my phone this exact problem happened again (phone turns off, only way to restart is pulling battery out). What is the next step to resolve this problem?

Everyone, Microsoft is responding to this. There is an update that was announced last month, and when announced they said it would be pushed "next month" (which is this month now), and yesterday Windows Phone Central (www.wpcentral.com) ran a story that it is going out to some of the international carrier-unlocked HTC 8x devices. This makes sense, as this is probably the smallest group of phones, since most of the Lumias are all tied to carriers, and Microsoft would want to test their first OTA (over the air) update on a small group first.

Additionally, one person who posts on WPCentral who works fairly high up in VZW posted a comment that his boss told him that the update is imminent for Verizon. So it is coming for us, soon.

Please help. My phone is still turning off after several hours. I noticed that when the battery level is at 1/2 power that is when it shuts down. I want a new phone. Please answer my emails. Lena said to send her a personal message and she would help. Where is she? Please help me resolve my issues.

First and foremost, don't put your name, address, or phone number on this board. Even if you do, a mod will remove it (assuming they see it), or someone will (or at least should) flag it for review by clicking the report abuse button (not that you're abusing anything) in order to draw a mod's attention to it, so that it will be deleted. This is for your own protection.

Second, if you have a problem that is as pressing as yours sounds, you shouldn't depend on the hit or miss (as I'm sure you've by now figured out the coverage is here) coverage that you'll get from VZW support here. This is generally to be considered a community support forum, a forum where we users, or customers, help each other, and in the case of a phone needing replacement, we obviously can't do that. You could just call *611 from your phone (or is it #611... I can never remember which is which...) to get Verizon Customer Service, and they can help you from there. That is where I recommend that you start.

Does this specifically correct the phone randomly turning off?

I made an earlier post about my 822 randomly turning off. Well, after a couple more weeks it still randomly turns off. It would work for a few days and turn off, work for a few days, then turn off. Then it started turning off every day for 4 days straight. I contacted VZ, where they did some simple restarts, but they had no clue if that helped. They then directed me to Nokia, where we did a full factory reset. It worked fine for a day and a half and then...wait for it...randomly turned off.

I contacted Verizon again and now they are supposedly going to replace the phone with another 822. Not once did they mention that any update would be coming out for this problem. I even spoke with a supervisor, who did not even reference any updates? Wouldn't they just tell me to hold on to the phone?

We could hope that they would, but the fact is that no, Verizon is not the best source of information when it comes to Windows Phone. I get most of my info from WPCentral, or from the Windows Phone Developer Center (I'm a dev), or a few other places (Nokia - I just joined the Nokia Premium Developer program so that I could get some of their perks, too), but if you go look in the WPCentral forums, specifically their WP8 forum and the Lumia 822 forum, you'll find infinitely more info than here. I only come here to help people here, but I've even gotten sick of that, because I'm tired of signing in and seeing helpful posts marked "This post is currently under moderation" for no good reason. The mods over here have some kind of power thing going on, and I'm just about done, so about the only time I even come over here anymore is when I see an email from a thread I've commented on already. Check out forums.wpcentral.com, and if you get the wpcentral app (it is definitely worth the 99 cents (I think that's what it cost) for the full version, but even the trial is good), and you'll get some good news on WP as well.

I called Verizon as you said (about my phone turning off when not used--like overnight) and was transferred twice and then finally they transferred me to a Nokia person in Asia. I took a deep sigh!!! BUT, she told me to plug the charger in my phone and wall socket and at the same time hold the on/off power swith and the volume down buttons on the right side. I did this until a big exclamation point came up. She told me to turn the phone on then off then on again to see if would come on and it did. My phone has not shut down since! It worked!

Hmmm.... How long did you have to hold the buttons, and did the red box screen keep flashing? I just tried this, and it flashed about 10 times before I gave up.

Yes the red box kept flashing and after awhile she told me to let it go. That was on Thursday and my phone has stayed on ever since then. Is your phone turning off too?

Mine hasn't turned off, but it has locked up several times while talking on the phone, and I've had to pull the battery to resolve it, and I've also witnessed it rebooting while it was just sitting on my desk or a table. I'm going to hold off on trying this for now, as I did a hard reset today, and I want to see if that resolves it. I did the hard reset in the hopes of resolving an issue with jittery recording of video when recording to the SD card.

Last night on Twitter I happened to see a conversation between Nokia Care US and someone else, and saw the correct steps to get the exclamation point. After another reboot this am, I tried it. We'll see if it works. Here's how I did it and actually did see the exclamation point:

1. Turn phone off. Not asleep, but all the way off.

2. Plug phone in and at the same time, pressed power button and volume down button, then released and held down the volume down button. The exclamation point came up.

3. Press/hold power button until it restarted again.

Now I'll wait and see if it happens again....

I've been meaning to email you all week. After the "fix" you describe below, my phone worked for about 5 days. Then it shut down over night. I called Asia (Nokia) again since I have an open ticket and another person told me to turn it off, plug it in, hold the volume up button, then down button, then up button, then down button, then power button and then restart the phone. They told me to "watch" my phone for 24 hours. About 2 days later, it turned off again over night. The battery was fully charged still. Nokia said that I could mail it back to them to troubleshoot or call Verizon for a new phone.

Yesterday I called and asked for a new phone and they put it in the mail to me today. I should get it next week. They will bill my account for the new phone and then when I return the other phone they will issue a credit. They Verizon person said that they were aware of the issue.

I hope this one works.

It is frustrating but I didn't have much information or apps or anything on it yet. Oh well, I hope they fix it soon. I really like the phone and Windows 8. I would like to buy a new Windows 8 laptop next year when they make them with Windows 8 Pro. I do a lot of Excel and Access programming.

I just got my Nokia yesterday and already having problems. It doesn't have a screen even when connected to the battery charger. Did the "hold down volume/power buttons" thingy until I got the cube...but that sure takes the excitement out of having the phone. Hate to think I have to do this all the time just to use it....drats.

After trying every tip on this forum, Multiple trips to the Verizon store for troubleshooting and being told by Verizon employees that everybody was in the same boat with this phone and Windows was working the bugs out (hopefully within the next few months )my husband after investing probably close to 8 hours with tech-support between Verizon and Nokia finally demanded that he got his money back . At that point they said they would send him a new phone. which they did. he has now had it for approximately 10 days and we have not had one problem with it. He loves it now that it's working correctly. sounds like some of these phones have a lot of bugs. Instead of going through everything that he went through, you might want to request a new one now. good luck!

I got my Windows Phone the week of Thanksgiving and within the first 10 days the phone shut off overnight. Ok no big deal..took it into the Verizon store and they said "oh just take out the battery, no big deal, you should be good to go now!:"NOPE..I am not. at least once a week since then my phone has randomly turned off when not in use, mostly overnight or during long periods in the day! This is so frustrating. I did the reset as suggestion on this forum. So far so good....then WHAM today I have had the phone shut off 3 times! Once while in th middle of a call...VERIZON STORE HERE I COME....the cruddy part is I really like this phone....maybe there are too many out there that had bad batteries?

My suggestion would be to relax, take a deep breath, and think happy thoughts. Those of us carrying Windows Phone 8 devices right now are early adopters, and as such, should expect problems in the beginning. Having been an early adopter of many different phones over the years, from WAY before iPhone, I've come to expect this kind of thing. It's really not that big a deal unless it's doing it all the time, and then you may possibly have a lemon. Microsoft has already put out an update that is directed at solving this problem, and were it not for the fact that this is their first OTA update ever, we probably would have all gotten it by now. But being that it is their first, they will proceed cautiously, taking the phones small groups at a time, and update them batch by batch, working out the kinks, just like they did with Nodo and Mango when they rolled out those updates on WP7. Those were not OTA updates, but it was their first time updating an entire population of phones at once. They did Nodo cautiously and slowly, and then Mango was much quicker. Now they're doing Portico slowly as it is their first OTA update.

Be patient. I know it's a pain, but that's one of the things that goes with being an early adopter.

I activated my Lumia 822 on Christmas Day. I have had it shut off 2x. I chose this phone because I wanted something a little different than the popular iPhone. I also have enjoyed and trusted Nokia products in the past. This issue is inconvenient but I am going to stick with it in hopes of an update to correct the problem. In just a few days I have come to really love this phone and I want it to get the most out of it. Microsoft, don't let me down.

Mine's been doing it intermittently too. I had a one week period where it didn't and now it has started turning off randomly again. The worse thing is I use it as an alarm to get up, as most of us do (do not miss having an alarm/radio bedside) and have missed important appointments because it shutoff overnight and not due to a dead battery.

I called Verizon and they said I was the first person to express this issue?!?!? REALLY!!!!. I hadn't yet seen this string of issues posted, or I would have referenced it. They had me do an annoying factory reset and are sending me a new battery, which came today but I wasn't home to receive it. The factory reset did not work because it mysteriously turned off again today and I had to yet again > Remove cover > take out battery > replace battery > replace cover...how barbaric! I'll post back to advise if the new battery Verizon sent, remedies the defect in Verizon Nokia Lumia 822.

It's not the battery. It's a bug in the OS. Microsoft has put out an update, and it has gone out to some phones, (8x international, and some other places, 920 on ATT and some other places). At this point it looks like it's up to Verizon (possibly in concert with Microsoft - maybe some changes after initial push to other phones) to decide when to give it to us. That is what should solve your problem. Unfortunately, this is part of being an early adopter, and all of us who are using WP8 right now really are early adopters. I've been an early adopter for years, so I guess I'm just used to it. After the update, and especially after the next update (code named Apollo+), that's when you'll see it become stable.

For the moment, try this reset - I've seen it posted by others that Nokia support reps (not Verizon) have had people do this, and with varying success. You will not lose any data, as this is not a hard reset, so don't worry about that.

Turn the phone off - all the way - hold the power button, then slide the screen down to turn off.
Plug it into the power cord and at the same time, press and hold the Volume Down button.
Hold the Volume Down button until the big exclamation point appears, then let go.
Phone should reboot.

I'm not sure if this made any difference for me or not, but it didn't hurt anything. It's worth a shot.

Knock on wood, my 822 has been flawless since I've had it. No issues with the SD card or random lockup or reboots.

As I mentioned to you a few weeks ago, Verizon sent me a new phone. The "old" phone box had a different version number. My "new" phone has been on and working ever since. Also, some of the start up messages like "here's what you can do with your new phone..." are different than the old one.

How did you get Verizon to ship you a new phone to you without returning your current phone? The new battery did not work for me, it stills turns off randomly. I want a new phone but the reps I speak to say I need to ship back with the shipping label that came with my order before they will replace and I don't want to be without a phone. What is the trick? Should I be demanding, drive it to their supervisor or be real nice and beg?

I've had a perfect relationship with my 822 for 30+ days until this AM when I pulled it out of my pocket, pressed the power button and - nothing. I knew something in that little black box was still working because my blue tooth in the car recognized it when I got in to visit my Verizon store. Still I couldn't turn it on. Obviously this is not an isolated problem 'cause the rep at the store pulled out and replaced my battery and then held down the power button while depressing the decrease volume button at the same time. The phone turned on and now works fine.

I see no one have replied to this recently. Did it get fixed for you? I've had my phone for about a week now and I'm having the same shut off issue. Happened twice the last 12 hours. One thing I've noticed though, is that it always happens when I turn the volume bar down to 0 (vibrate only), is this the case for you guys too?

Still happens about once/week, usually after I've put it in my pants pocket. (Nothing else kept in that pocket but a handkerchief.) Has nothing to do with the volume bar on mine.

It almost sounds like a pressure issue on the phone. Like the power button is being depressed as your leg is moving maybe causing the power button to be pushed, however I wonder if you have a pinch on the phone cover. They're very tight, and if it is off even a mm it'll pinch the power button. My otterbox did that to me three times and it wasn't until I took it off myself and looked, there was some extra material, (from the mold process) and it was pressing on my power button when I had the phone in my pocket. Cleaned it out, phone has stayed on every since.

I don't know about that, wouldn't you at least see a "goodbye" message if it accidentally shut down like that? I'm a student and work on my PC all day, with my phone laying right in front of me. I would most definitely see it light up if it shut down a "normal" way.

I did the exclamation mark restart on Friday and my phone worked perfect. Got my Portico update sent to my phone Monday and thought this would fix the problem completely, but woke up to a dead phone again today (Tuesday). :smileysad: At least it seems like the exclamation mark restart works for a while, I was up to it dying 4 times a day before I did that restart, and my phone is only 2 weeks old.

I would think so. I was pointing out only that in my case it was a bit of "bonus" material in my Otterbox. Given the breadth of this issue I'm thinking it is by and large an OS issue and not a physical one. Fourtunately for me at this point I do not share the problem, and of course, I'm hoping I do not.

Not sure if it does or doesn't, just pointing out that in MY case, it was material from the Otterbox pushing down on the power button. Nothing more.

I just did a Windows Update 4 days ago and now I am having more "random shut off" issues more than ever! At least 3 times a day, random times, even within an hour of using it. It has shut down overnight, in the middle of my work day it has even randomly shut off on my drive from home to work ( I used it before I left and when I got to work...OFF!) it's only a 30 minute drive. I am at this point tired of this.

ugh....any fixes? that don't cost an arm and a leg!? and that WORK!

Interesting. I did an update a couple weeks ago and my phone has yet to shut down by itself. On my phone I went to Settings/phone update/check for updates. I installed the update that was there and it seems to have cured the shutting down by itself issue. Hope that was it. Will let you guys know if it happens again.

This is my first smartphone and I really like it. I just wish it would stop powering off. It is happening at least once a day sometimes more. Sometime when it powers off it takes 30 minutes or more to power back up. I've exchanged the phone twice. I'm convinced it is a software not hardware problem and will just patiently wait for an update because I like this phone too much to trade it in for a different type.

Oh no! Software updates are supposed to make the device sweeter, and I apologize that this did not occur. I want to help. Based on the information that you have provided, I believe some part of the software has become corrupted. When a device completes a software update, sometimes not all applications restore properly. I am going to recommend a Hard Reset to the device http://vz.to/UlCoE3. Keep me posted.

The update/ hard reset worked! So far so good..

It was a pain on the butt to reset all my personal settings but having it most of it backed up was nice! Lets hope this fixes all those random shut off moments and I don't miss important calls!

D E A D P H O N E! that is what I woke up to this morning! Good thing I did not miss any important calls! I spent the time to do a full HARD RESET 2 days ago by the advice of Verizon (thank you....I was optimistic with it this time) and now....SAME DARN ISSUE! RANDOM SHUT OFF...and I had a full battery!

I need a new phone and should get a NEW one. I have been very patient with this, not troubling Verizon, etc because I know all "new" things have glitches & kinks to work out...but this is sort of ridiculous! I guess good guys do finish last.

I don't have time in my busy life with workfull time, an extra job, kids, kids sports, activities, etc to deal with a dead phone is not in my plan.

I like the phone..I just want one that works...all the time. I pay the monthly insurance.

Frustrated with this.

At this point I need a new phone. I can have my phone PLUGGED IN to charge and it will randomly SHUT OFF.

Trying to find a point in my schedule to visit a Verizon store to get this taken care of.

Do you have any other suggestions? I have been VERY patient with this, understanding that all "new" things have glitches etc. But at this point I have had enough. Nearly EVERY DAY I have to open the back of the phone, take out and put the battery back in..very troublesome.

I received my 822 Thursday of last week. Last night I left it on my desk without the USB cable plugged in. When I tried to use it today it would not turn on. I had to remove the battery, wait a while, put the battery back and then plug in the charging cable before it would start.

As near as I can tell from this tread the problem is likely to get worse. Is that the case?

I have relied on my previous phone as a timer to alert me when I had to put money in a meter, as an alarm clock and for many other things. Since this model is not reliable Verizon should recall it before it causes a major problem for many of its customers. Will Verizon recall it or do we have to raise the issue with one the consumer protection agencies?

I got my 822 less than 24 hours ago. I have not installed any Apps, or done anything but try to learn my phones abilities. It was on the charger last night. Locked out this morning. Had to pull battery to get it to work. It is not apps, or anything of the like. It is an issue with the phone itself. I will be returning mine soon. I have 14 days to decide. This is not good to have a phone less than a day, and have this type of issue already.

@ hopmedic. I guess what I was trying to say was, Do you have any information for my situation? I have had the phone less than a day, but getting the same issue as people that have had their phones longer. Would seem to me that there is something wrong with the phone itself, right? I mean, less than 24 hours. My phone was locked up. On the charger. So the battery wasn't dead.

YEAH this is getting a bit ridiculous. I have had my phone since the 13th. My phone started shutting off on me two days ago. Called Verizon yesterday, they had to reset it back to factory standards and are sending me a new phone. Even with the reset its still shutting off. They must have seen all the problems with it and just opted to send me a new one. My husband has had his Nokia Lumia 822 for over 3 months now with NO problems. What gives?

Actually. There was an update that ran on my phone Monday night. I haven’t had an issue since. Waiting to see how that goes. I do like the phone a lot, minus the shutdown I had.

Just had another lock out again. Have had this phone a week now. After the update that ran a week ago I hadn't had a problem until today. I am still under that 14 day return policy, so I am just going to take it back and get something else. Was hoping that the update would fix the issue. In any case, thank you for trying to help.

Same here and I have several of the 822. They just go to sleep and only way to fix is battery out and start over. When is the patch coming? Is there any ETA or should I just call my lawyer and start the process of returning a 1 month old product that is defective. Come on Nokia, get this fixed - just tweak the sleep mode or something for a temp fix!

Go to Settings>lock screen>Screen times out after check the options again. You will see there are 7 options available: '30 seconds', '1 minute', '3 minutes', '5 minutes', '15 minutes', '30 minutes' and lastly 'never'.

Tap on 'never' to deactivate screen locking because the screen lock is also Windows Phone's Sleep mode.

Mine only goes to "5 Minutes" on lock screen settings.

I also am having similar issues and I urge ANYONE with this issue to not mess around and let Verizon make you trouble-shoot through your 14-day window. I'm at 21 days and have had issues since the first day I had my phone with random shut-offs that require removing the battery and putting it back in. My phone does it 1-3 times in a 24-hour period with no discernible pattern.

I have a factory refurb on the way, but I'm not really happy about that. I have this brand new phone for 3 weeks and it's never worked properly and they think that the solution is to send me a used phone. NOT happy.

I have experienced this with my Son's White 822, not of my friends Red 822's have yet to experience this issue. I have him turning off the phone's WiFi when not using the phone. It has not shut down for two weeks so far. There is definitely a issue with the firmware/software on this phone that will need an update to correct. Also holding down the Volume Down and Power Buttons at the same time until the phone soft resets (15-22 sec) will restart the phone without having to remove the battery.

Its seems either I am alone or everyone else has either got a replacement or have moved on ,

I got this phone barely a week ago , but started using from 2 days back only ,

and i am having this spontaneous shut off issue ,

In last two days i have found it to be turned off in the morning and i had to do soft reset

the phone got switched off twice during the day in my pocket , and once yesterday as well .

Sending it back is not an option now , seems i am kinna stuck with this .

Why can't you not send it back? If not can you stop by a VZW store and see if they can replace it? You're under warranty so there should be no questions about getting replaced. It's hardware related.

Otherwise you'll have to wait for VZW to release GDR2 and hope that will fix you problems.

i guess i set myself up with this phone. got it in the spring of '13 with my upgrade after having read about the shut off problems, and was about to get a samsung, but then read many responses by verizon in the reviews that they were aware of the problem and a update fix would be out by early summer. i figured i could stand it for a few months until early summer when the fix came out (wanted to try a windows phone) but it is now late summer and no fix, and all posts i had seen before by verizon in response to reviews have been removed. i have been a long time verizon customer but when this contract is up i may shop around, it just feels a little deceiving. i almost want to laugh reading them give advice on how to make sure you phone is operating correctly when they know it's a problem with the product itself.
