upgrading from a prepaid pay as you use plan to prepaid monthly charge plan

I have a prepaid plan with a (very) basic phone, just renewed for a year a few days ago. Although I do not use the phone that often (more for peace of mind), I am now thinking about prepaid Smart phone plan that would upgrade phone and change the way my current plan works (my plan is pay as you use, not a monthly charge). IF I go to one of the smartphone plans:

1) Do I keep my number

2) Would phone price and plan price be deducted from current plan balance, or do I start over
