Identical iPhones, one says VzW, other says Verizon -- Why?

Hi there,

Wife and I just switched to Verizon from AT&T.  We both have the same model iPhone 8 Plus.  Sitting on our couch and not connected to Wi-fi, her iPhone says VzW in the top left for the carrier and mine says Verizon.  Why is this?

I'm wondering because I've noticed with my iPhone that I get pretty terrible LTE speed and we are on the highest unlimited plan.
