If that doesn't work, will need to do factory reset on device and then enter the Google credentials that were on device prior to reset to avoid activation lock/kill switch....

Also, do you currently have a Gmail email account that is attached to your device? If so, please follow this link http://bit.ly/2nxrT4Z to be able to sign into the Android device manager which will allow you to remotely change your password to unlock your device.

This does not work on newer software just older
Very unfortunate
That is not correct. I just tested on multiple devices running jelly bean, nougat, and then oreo with success having device play sound, tracking on a map, and also remote wipe.
I was able to do all of these via the link provided above, on both mobile devices and a computer....
