BAD reception at home

Why is my cell reception so bad at home?  I average 2-3 bars of 3G max - calls keep dropping and wi-fi is a joke.  I live in the Denver suburbs (Lakewood) and I get better cell service when I'm hiking in the mountains!  Why is the expensive unlimited data service with the supposedly best network of 4G coverage in the US that I pay for essentially unusable in my home?

It might be helpful to know which phone you have. Not all phones are equipped with all bands Verizon uses. For instance, you may have a phone with LTE bands 2, and 4, but not 13. That would be a serious impediment on the VZW network.
