all of my contacts have disappeared from my phone except in favorites I have numbers and no names can you help me fix this please

I have no idea how they went away I just open the phone to answer it and when I went to make a call there were enough there was nothing not a single person left in my contacts the phone numbers in my favorites are still there but the names are gone thank you

Was the contact list backed-up to a cloud service...such as the one Verizon Wireless offers, or the one that Google does? If so, the information should be retrievable for such a location.
