What happens to my account after I pay off a device, besides no longer having the device payment?

Nothing changes on your bill with the exception of the device payment coming off it. The account is already on a month to month contract.
What would Verizon do if I bought a Galaxy S9+ directly from Samsung, and switched my service to the new phone?
