Nowhere on the website does it tell how to use a 3 digit number and the star key to talk to verizon directly

We have many ways to be contacted, including the *611 method that Ann154 offered that sends you to our call centers. As an additional option, if using the My Verizon mobile app, you can access Live Chat at any time by tapping on the text bubble icon in the upper corner of most screens. You'd start off talking to an automated program that can handle basic requests (be sure to use simple phrases like with a search engine), but can always request a live agent through there as well.
