For the first 22 months we lived here I had basically no issues with Verizon internet service. Now the service is erratic and often slow or non-existent. I have the T1114 - Broadband Router with Voice as my hub. During problem times I will swtich wifi off on our phones and try to connect directly with 4G so I'm sure that the issue is internet service from our local tower and not my network. Sometimes on the phones we have 4 bars and 4G service, sometimes down to 1 bar and no 4G. This is standing outside facing the tower. I'm on a island and the tower is near the coast so unless someone over in St. Teresa is flying a big aluminum foil kite there is nothing between us and the tower.
My other problem now is even when we have good service the latency between here and my employers servers in Fenton Mo is too long. For almost 2 years I had no problem making VPN connection to my work servers. About 2 months ago that changed and I can no longer connect directly to my work servers using VPN. I can access our public facing servers and other non-VPN secure connections usually with no problems. This affects both my PCs and is the same using the router or when using my phone as a hotspot. I can connect directly to work via VPN when I go to the next closest town of any size, Crawfordville, FL.
Since this started I have been able to work from home by using Tunnel Bear paid VPN service. I connect to the Tunnel Bear VPN and then through that connection I am able to connect using VPN to my work servers. So it is not strictly a VPN issue. This week I can't reliably stay connected to the Tunnel Bear servers.
No landline or cable providers on Dog Island so unless I can convince Mediacom to drop a hub over here I'm screwed.
