Are we losing the Eris?

now that i just finished by 30 day trial of the Eris, which i really like & decided to keep; im now hearing this phone may be discontinued w/in the next cpl months. has anyone else heard this or has it been mentioned on this forum? if so, why would a phone that's just been introduced be discontinued already? seem like i read somewhere they are going to replace it with a phone called 'Incredible' but not sure where i read that. if that's true, why would you replace a phone so suddenly? so many are upset the 2.0 version is not out yet; could this be the reason, because the phone will not be in existence much longer? i hope this is not true. thx.

Well it's rumored to be at the end of it's life within the next couple of months. The next 'big' Sense UI phone will be, yes, the "Incredible" as you've read. And will be heading towards Verizon. It could only be assumed that it would be the more older, better version of the Eris, so...

All of this is only speculation. We can't confirm anything until the phones are actually out.

Many phones expire (stop being sold) within 6 months of being out, so this shouldn't scare you. Phones are being replaced especially with first/second generation Android phones. Newer OS and better hardware will be in the newer phones. The Eris is getting updated, but it won't run as smooth as the newer phones will, because the Eris has older hardware(porcessor, memory and other stuff.) The Eris is a great phoen as you mentioned. Don't worry about the next best thing, unless you want to upgrade, but it will cost you.

That is true of how phones expire. Phones are just out for a certain amount of time and then they are discontinued. As some people put it, out with the old and in with the new. Once Eris is going to be discontinued, most likely it'll drop in price before it gets taken away. That is how it was with my G1. G1 is still available from T-mobile. I paid $300 for it. Now it is down to $99!

I went into a verizon store mid January and got two Eris.s for nothing after rebate.s the price has been going down since they were releasd.

Actually, the "won't run as well" is not correct. So far, each incarnation of Android has actually been smoother running than the previous generation of the OS. That isn't always going to be the case, but so far it has held true. I can tell you from experience, the Eris on 2.1 is much smoother and snappeir than than it is running on 1.5.

Yes, they may not put in active desktops to save some processing power, but the over-all smoothness/responsiveness is immediately noticible. No, it's not as fast as the Motorola Droid running 2.1, but it's completely acceptable, and the new Eris owner should find it to be better than his current experience.

i understand about phones coming and going....i just never seen one leave so early. maybe b/c the phones i've had in the past never expired so fast & i never noticed other phones that may have. the Moto Droid came out the same time as the Eris & i haven't heard that's on the way out the door soon. that's why i was wondering if there is a problem with the Eris that i haven't heard about & HTC & VZW decided to replace it. was also wondering is that why there has been a delay in the 2.0 OS. i'm not one of those folks who is angry b/c it has not been updated to the Eris yet but makes me wonder if it ever will now. i'm ok with how it runs so far but it would be nice to see it run somewhat faster. wish i knew about the 'Incredible' coming out...i would of waited to check it out. wonder if the Incredible will have a better battery life.

When it comes to the smartphones the hardware technologies takes a leap forward every three months. It takes longer than that to get a new design approved through the FCC. Whatever hits the vendors shelf today is outdated before you buy it. What is today's hot tech is next quarters end of life. Software always lags 1 to 2 years behind the hardware. Pick your poison and jump in. Stop lamenting you don't have this or that latest revision. That's the nature of high tech. Been this way for 20 years. If you can't handle it, get a basic phone and make you calls and laugh at the fools with their high tech toys.

I have the Eris and installed the leaked 2.1 ROM. It will do the job for the next 18 months. I'm happy. By then we should have optical implants that have 1080P HDTV and 5.1 surround audio with mutl-satellite voice calling.

Does the leaked 2.1 version fix the problem with voice activated dialing via bluetooth?
