WHen i get a text notification on my droid the message scrolls across the top of my screen even though its locked how can i stop that from happening.

From the messaging app main screen, press Menu > Settings, then scroll down to Notifications and uncheck it.
For another option, this thread suggests using Handcent SMS from the app store.

I would agree with logicman on this. Handcent is much better than the stock app and it's free. I should have mentioned that above.
