Can I change my phone number area code to reflect a state I don't live in?

I want to change my phone number, but get a phone number with an area code for a state I used to live in.

I see that I can enter a zip code to get a list of area code and first three prefixes, but I don't know if entering a completely different zip code for a state and city I don't even live in makes any difference to changing phone numbers.

Quinnnmallory, you will be able to select the prefix and the area code for your number change and then the rest of the number will be assigned based on what is available. This will not cause any issues for your number change.
