I recently signed up for the 5GB prepaid plan. At the time I signed up I was under the impression that the cost was $40 per month.
After determining that the cost was within my desired budget I went to a Verizon store and bought a phone and signed up for the 5GB shared data plan. However, after getting my first bill I noticed I was being charged $65. Confused I investigated Verizon's Bill and noticed that I was being charged $30 a month for the data and another $35 a month for the smartphone line access fee.
Now, I totally understand my bill and how much to expect for future months. However, when I was shopping for plans and decided on Verizon I never saw any mention of a line access fee in addition to the advertised $40 a month charge for the data plan (before loyalty discounts are applied) that I was looking at.
I even went back and reexamined the prepaid plans website page more carefully and did not see any mention of a line access fee (not even under the "See plan details" link).
What my question is; before a new customer wastes time and money signing up for Verizon's service, how are they supposed to know that there is an extra $35 line access fee that they will be charged each month? In my case, I spent $134 on activation fees ($35), phone payment agreement fee($25) plus the recurring $75 for the data plan, line access fee, and the standard taxes and gov. fees.
With the carrier, I would have otherwise signed up for if I had known the real cost I would have only spent $35 total for each month's data and phone access. This is $40 less than the recurring cost for Verizon's service after the initial one-time fees which adds up to a $480 extra expense every year that I was unaware of before deciding to go with Verizon.
