VPN Connection Drops

I am running Windows XP, and Cisco VPN Client on my HP laptop connected directly to my home FIOS router - not wireless.

My VNP connects fine, but it consistently drops the connection after 2 to 60 minutes. It use to stay up for days, but I can not get it to remain connected. I have used the computer on other connections and the VPN will still stay up for days. Any suggestions?

What is the brand, model, and ver of this Verizon router?

For example: Actiontec, MI-424-MI, Rev C

Router is a D Link model DI 624. Hardware version C3. Firmware version V2.43ddm

Could be the ont just needs a reboot. Its worked in the past and I can only imagine that u have reset the router and pc a few times.

Try disconnecting the power supply for the ont. Open the bbm. Disconnect the battery for a minute. Plug the power supply in first wait for the red replace battery light and the reconnect the battery. Then reboot your router one more time and try it. If that doesn't work it could be the router. U have probably had it a while.

And by bbm I meant bbu. Battery back up unit.

It is not your problem. You are experiencing intermittent packet loss at the 2nd hop along your route to your destination.

Run "tracert -h 30 www.google.com"

Open two more cmd prompt windows.

In the 2nd cmd prompt run "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t -w 1000" where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the first hop after your internal router.

In the 3rd cmd prompt run "ping yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy -t -w 1000" where yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy is the IP address of the 2nd hop after your internal router.

If you are like me, you will notice that when you connection drops, the first hop will continue to receive replies and the 2nd hop will start timing out. There is nothing you can do about this problem except call and complain for Verizon to fix it. It just started happening to me a few days ago after 3 years of nearly flawless service.

OK, I tried the reset with unplugging the battery and no difference. It stayed up for about an hour, so I though it might be better. Next time, it was connected for 6 minutes before dropping.

In the Cisco VPN client, there used to be options in the configuration section to chose between UDP and TCP modes (at one point I think it was called "behind NAT" or maybe that was second option). Try change to TCP mode and behind NAT in the options for the VPN connection. UDP only connections behind NAT routers sometimes run into issues with the NAT router closing the return packet path after a period of inactivity which can be rather short.
