Verizon Routers

Why can't a FiOS residential customer be provided with an Actiontec MI424-WR, Rev G, capable of GigE (1000MB) and Wireless N (300MB)? Currently, I have the standard Rev E, which is limited to Fast Ethernet (100MB) and Wireless G (54MB).

Not certain why Verizon thinks their FiOS residential customer should use archaic technology.

What most of us do is just buy an N router and then piggy back it to the westell.

Those routers you mentioned, may become more commonplace in the next year or two, but they aren't commonplace today for Verizon, and there is no real good way to request one. Verizon basically seems to thinks G is fast enough to support the FiOS speed tiers, and for the most part it is. fastest plans that most customers have is 35/35 and the Wireless G will do upto 54 MB

The "N" routers that Verizon has have been reserved for the 150/50 data plan. And the only reason they have it for that plan is because they couldnt get a "G" router with gigabit ethernet. Otherwise it would be "G" also. They say the reasoning for this is that they do not support wireless (AT ALL). The only reason the routers have wireless in the first place is because they couldnt get plain wired routers configured they way they wanted for the TV service. Otherwise the routers would not have wireless at all. And if they start giving out "N" routers, customers would expect them to support it and they will not do that. As it is, most customers expect Verizon to support the "G" and they have to keep telling customers that the wireless is not supported.

EDIT: I said they dont support wireless AT ALL but I should have said. They do not support wireless speed AT ALL. They will help you get connected if you are not more than 10 feet away, and if you can connect, thats where the support ends. Even if you can only get 1Mbs, they will consider that connected. Only wired speeds are supported, therefore the G routers are more than adequate for their needs. If the customer needs more than that, they are on their own for doing it.

I started to reply to the OP along the same lines as Hubrisnxs and spacedebris but my post sounded more like a rant so I just cancelled it.

However, let me say that for all the years I had cable service the cable company didn't even provide any router, much less wifi. Maybe they had the right idea. Smiley Wink

I offered to buy the router, to maintain compatibility, but they would not sell it. I tried to buy from the manufacturer and they would not sell it because of an exclusive contract with Verizon.

you may be able to find a MI424 Rev G router on Ebay, but that is about the only place that I have seen them. You can not request one from Verizon unfortunately. keep in mind it's dual antenna, so if you see a single antenna on there, that they advertise as wireless N, just realize it's not FULL N MIMO compliant, and you won't be getting the 300 mbs out of it.

They are pretty scarce though.

My suggestion would be do as I've done. Buy an inexpensive switch for gigabit LAN capabilties, and buy a 802.11n WAP that meets your needs. You'll get what you want and not be dependent on Verizon.

Look at FiOS as your connection to the outside world.

Not the point, in my opinion. Yes, I can buy an add-on wireless router with the N capability, but why should I when Verizon already has a solution for the FiOD residential user, but refuses to provide them with it.

I worked for the Fed, ordering DoD circuits through the WITS contract. Verizon whined when the Apple/AT&T monopoly appeared. They are now doing the same thing by not allowing a commercial vendor to sell their product to the public.

Sounds like an FCC dream.

No, you will not see an Actiontec MI424-WR Rev G, on eBay because of the exclusivity agreement between Verizon and Actiontec.

What does an exclusivity agreement between VZ and Actiontec have to do with rev. G routers appearing on eBay?

Actiontec routers sold on eBay are sold be private parties, not by VZ or Actiontec.

Rev. G routers have in fact been sold on eBay. However they are scarce since there are relatively few 150/35 customers and of those customers even fewer have canceled leaving a rev. G to be disposed of.
