Wireless is working, but I can't seem to connect

I've been using an older laptop to connect to my wireless with no problem. Recently I purchased a new laptop and an iPod Touch, but neither can connect to my wireless. I can connect through other people's signals (I'm in an apartment building) but not my own. I know that mine is still working though, because the older laptop will still connect. Also, I can see my wireless showing a strong signal when I look at the available connections, but it just doesn't allow me to connect. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try logging into the router and changing the broadcast type. Your new laptop might be receiving in a different band then the router is broadcasting. Try changing this around and see if that fixes the issue. If not, refresh the WEP shared key, if this still doesn't help sort the broadcasting out by MAC address.

Let me know if any of this helps, if not, there are other options you can try still.

What router?

It could be your older computer is running 802.11b and forcing the router to operate at a reduced connection speed, and the new computer will not support the slower connection speed. Will the new laptop operate and connect if the older laptop is turned off and not connected?

I'm having the same problem, just in reverse. I had a laptop that my wireless was working fine on, and then the computer died. I'm now using my dad's laptop, and though it can pick up other wireless networks (aka what I'm using right now), it will absolutely not let me connect to my wireless internet. I feel like I've tried everything and I just don't know what to do now. 😞 It gives me the whole "access: local only" issue.

The default ESSID (wireless network name) and the default WEP key (wireless network password) are both printed on a sticker on the bottom of the router.

It is just a matter of finding the network that matches the ESSID in your wireless software, clicking connect, and when prompted for the key/password, type in the WEP key.

Make sure everything gets typed in EXACTLY like it is on the sticker... do not mistake a 0 for an O or a B for an 8

If all else fails, reset the router with a paperclip or pen in the reset hole on the back of the router for 15 seconds, reboot the PC and try again... should work fine

We received our FIOS system on Friday. I spent an hour yesterday with a tech, who agreed with me that this was a problem. ONE of our wireless devices, a vista laptop, is working just fine, and was here all day Friday. NO OTHER wireless devices are working properly, including an ibook, an xp desktop, and the wii system. All have 'logged on' and are visible in the actiontec list of logged on devices. All show a strong signal and show themselves connected to the actiontec. All have entered the WEP password correctly.

I tried turning off the wep password and turning off all of the devices and starting over. I have reset the router. I have reset the devices.

Okay folks, what is next???

If one device works, then the wireless network is working.... I can only assume as to why your other devices are not.... since they show to be connectd and the Actiontec see them, maybe they have the wrong DNS settings???

hard to say, but I would start from scratch... Reset the router, reboot the devices and try again.

Remember that all windows products require capital letters in the WEP key, and all MAC products require lower case letters. Also, the WEP key will not have a capital O, only zeroes (0).
