I have had my FIOS network for a while now but it is unsecured. How do I secure my wireless network so only my desktop and my 2 laptops or authorized quests can get on? I have tried to do it before but I have no idea what I am doing!
Please Help!
I sure understand not having any idea of what I'm doing! lol
I wrote down what I did the first time I set up my secure network, so I'll pass the info along to you. Hopefully it will help. (I have an actiontec router btw)
open internet browser (i.e. or firefox, etc.)
type: http://192.168.1.1the verizon router login page comes up...type in your login info. Usually your username is admin and password is either password1 or password*this may look like it's adding dots to what you are typing, but it's okay, just type the correct password and ignore what the dots are doing*Once logged in, click on wireless settings at the top of the page. You will see the "wireless status" page.Click on Basic Security Settings. If you want to name your network (any name you want) go to 2. and in the box after SSID: type in the name you want to assign your network. You don't have to do this, but it makes it easier if you have any guests using your network to locate it when they search for networks. (make sure you click apply at the bottom to save this setting)
If you want to use WEP as your security make sure it is checked under 4. Then go to 5 and do what it says and when finished make sure you write down your key code and click apply. I was told that this WEP wasn't the most secure and that I was better off using WPA, so that's what I did...see next paragraph on how to do this (plus using WPA is easier to remember your password).
Go to "advanced security settings". Under level 1, choose WPA. When you choose WPA, a new page will pop up. Under "pre-shared key" type your password that you choose (make this pretty long and a combination of whatever you want that no one in your neighborhood can guess) and remember your encryption algorithm (TKIP) because when you use your laptop to connect to the internet and you search your network for the first time, you want to have all the identical information. Click apply. Now on your laptop, go to connect to a network. Find your network and click connect. It will ask for your password (not sure if it will show the TKIP or not but I kinda remember that it did when I first did this but it wasn't something I had to change since it was already at that setting). when you are searching for networks to connect to, you will now see that yours says it's a secure network.
I hope this helps!
Also, here is the link to the manual for the actiontec router for verizon. Just look under Advanced Security Settings (Page 32). You can follow the WPA instructions and see what the boxes will look like when you are doing it.

Good luck! Let us if you had success! 🙂
