Can a Linkys WRT54G or D-Link DI-614+ router be used with MI424WR router and if so how?

Tried connecting Linksys WRT54G and D-link DI-614+ to Actiontec MI424WR both old style square type (Ver 2?) and newer one (Revision E with USB port) without success. Used a Netgear Fast Ethernet Switch FS108 to connect PC's using XP and Vista to the MI424WR routers and got connectivity. The IP address for the Actiontec MI424WR routers (both of them) is 192.168.1.1 which is the same address on the Linksys router. The D-link router has IP address 192.168.0.1 which should not conflict with the Actiontec routers. Can login the each device as the administrator if using only that device. When I tried to change the IP address in the Linksys router to another IP address it looked like it worked but I was not able to login again. Had to push reset button and reset to factory defaults to login again.

Are either of these units compatible with the Actiontec MI424WR router?

Do I have to disable DHCP on each one first?

If I am able to use either or both routers with one of the MI424WR routers can I use the 802.11 wireless features on the Linksys and D-Link routers. I did connect to the Actiontec wireless after setting SSID and WEP parameters.

Hi,

The problem is likely due to router firmware issue. This is what you can do.

1) Go to http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/support to search for your router model, and download the latest firmware
2) Go to http://www.idealinternet.co.uk/restore-linksys-firmware.tpl and download the linksys-tftp.exe available on that page
3) Run the linksys-tftp.exe program. Key in the details as below:

Server : 192.168.1.1
Password : admin
File : <look for the firmware file that you had download earlier>

4) Click Upgrade
5) You should be able to see the progress bar that shows upgrading in process and eventually, it will show a message that firmware had been upgraded
6) After that, try going to the page 192.168.1.1 . Leave the username blank and key password as admin
7) The page should load nicely after the firmware had been upgraded successfully!!

After changing the ip address on the linksys router for example 192.168.3.1 you need to change the address in your browser address line to be the new address you configured and then refresh, the user and password will be the same.

Your simplest connection method is to connect a LAN port of the actiontec to the WAN port of the linksys. You can do the same with the Dlink via a second LAN port on the actiontec.

You should probably make the wan side of the linksys and dlink static addresses on the actiontec 192.168.1 subnet as it makes port forwarding thru the double nat simplere.

Be aware that doing it by this method will make it difficult for devices connected to the actiontec to see devices connected to the secondary routers. Devices on the secondary routers will have no problem accessing the internet and all devices connected to the actiontec.

You should not need to make any other changes, dhcp and wireless can continue running on all the routers

You haven't stated how these routers are connected together.

Are they connected Actiontec LAN to Linksys/D-Link WAN port, or connected Actiontec LAN port to Linksys/D-Link LAN port? Or some other combination? The difference is important.

If the connection is Actiontec LAN to Linksys/D-Link WAN, then the Linksys and D-Link LAN subnets must be different from the Actiontec. DHCP server must be enabled in the secondary routers.

If the connection is Actiontec LAN to Linksys/D-Link LAN, then the Linksys and D-Link must have unique LAN addresses on the Actiontec subnet. DHCP server must be disabled in both the Linksys and D-Link.

In either case, the Linksys can not have the same IP address as the Actiontec regardless of LAN-to-WAN or LAN-TO-LAN.

Again, that depends on how the routers are inter-connected. The D-Link can not have a 192.168.0.1 address if you're using LAN-to-LAN.

If you changed the subnet of the Linksys, then you PC was no longer on the same subnet and could not communicate with the Linksys after the change. An IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW would resolve that.
