i was told that if you are in a contract you have to have your current cell phone at least 6 months before you can upgrade to a smartphone. does anyone know if this is true?
No. You have to fullfill your contractual obligations. One thing I do know is that you can upgrade to a palm phone during middle of contract. Its a special only PALM has with Verizon. Call and inquire about it!
You can only get a discount on a phone (upgrade) if you are *qualified* for it. Contacts are set to either 1 year or 2 years depending on which one you picked. Anywhere after the contact is up then you can upgrade. Anywhere before that you'll have to pay full price for a device.
Great One, I was able to get a Droid through a program called, I think, CPO, or COP, which allowed me to buy a refurbished Moto Droid for $289.00 instead of the $559.00 that I was fully prepared to pay to get out of that friggin' Samsung Omnia II that was tasking me to no end (loved the phone, HATE Winmobile 6.5). I was only 6 months into the contract. This MIGHT be an option for the OP. I walked into the local Verizon store with $600.00 in my pocket and a long, sad look on my face, .and the rep that I always deal with (hi, Larry!) looked into this COP program. It appeared that this program was about to end or they were almost out of the phones, so I don't know if it will be an option. I paid the $289.00 for the phone and it was shipped to me overnight. I consider myself VERY fortunate to have found this deal. The refurbed Droid looks brand-new and came with 2.1 software and a home charger.
A very long shot, indeed, but hey, I have a Droid now. There's no place like home, ...

gerio....it's not ending or anything like that.....but they don't always have all of the phones. i was actually going to do the same thing as you (get a refurb moto droid). then i called and the lady offered to let me use my wifes upgrade to get the incredible. my wife wanted an allias II. they sell the refurbs of those for $100 so i got the incredible and her allias for $300 vs. getting a moto and the allias for $320 (290 for fefurb moto and $30 for allias w/her upgrade). the refurbs are what they use as replacement phones so anytime you've returned a phone for whatever reason and got a "new" one...it's really a refurbished used phone. they are as good (or better) than new though, as vzn only uses ones that are in mint condition and everyone of them are tested before being used as a replacement, or sold. more than likely any new phone you've ever had has not been tested as they test samples of large batches of new phones. most of the phones come EXACTLY as they do brand new. the one thing that annoyed be with the droid though, is that they advertise that it's just like getting a new one, but they don't throw in the 16 gb micro sd, like a new one comes with.

$289 is not bad compared to $559! You saved money. Refurbished phones can be like new. Sometimes it depends. I have seen complaints of where people have received refurbished device & then have problems still. Consider yourself lucky & I am glad your phone is working for you.
